[MJ 8.0.270] I'm using Media Server on my workstation and have troubles playing some MP3 files (encoded with Lame VBR - Normal) from my laptop when connecting to the given server: through MJ (client) finds the files and gives the proper information about them (size, type, ...), it just goes from one file to the other without playing them, as if the files were empty.
Any clue ?

Hello,
One thing I can think off is that the file is missing. The database might still have the information but the file may be physically located at a different location or it was removed. Try update your library and see what happens.

I tried all of what I could think of... the given files (only some of them) plays perfectly OK on the server but not on the client (through MJ Server)... Reverted to drive mapping and MJ library sharing: problem solved... at least on my local network.

Can you send us a file that won't work? jimh @ jriver.com . Thanks.

I had the same problem a while back, and now its all good...but I can't quite remember what the problem was...but I have a feeling it was something to do with the firewall..

I'm seeing the same thing when trying to access my home Media Server from work. Chances are good it's a fire wall problem since I can use Media Server fine at home on the LAN.
For anyone else who might bump into this, the symptoms are: your client can connect to Media Server without problem, and the library downloads fine, but each attempt to stream/play a song (MP3 128kbs) fails (no error is displayed) and after about 3 failures the client stops.
So presumably the fetching of the Library is done via some protocol (HTTP) that my employer's firewall allows but the streaming protocol is not recognized and is blocked (not too surprizingly).

Update: Apparently it's not the firewall at work that's keeping me from playing tunes from my Media Server running at home.
I was able to connect to and play songs from King Sparta's server so I'm not sure what the problem it.
I'm pretty sure the server isn't the problem as I was able to connect to the server from a friends house.
I'm stumped. Any suggestions? Here's my info:

o Everything works fine locally even using external IP (non 168.192.x.x)
o When connecting from work the library downloads fine but songs refuse to play.
o All files are MP3 files
o Connecting from work to KingSparta's server worked fine

From your log it seems there is a problem on writing to the sockets. Don't really know what to suggest, but in caase this gives you some inspiration, these are the errors. The only clue would be that reference to "keep alive" activity... see if you have anything else network related running and try turn it off, and double check again eventual firewall setting
Good Luck
Claudio
WSAECONNRESET
(10054)
Connection reset by peer.
A existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. This normally results if the peer application on the remote host is suddenly stopped, the host is rebooted, or the remote host used a "hard close" (see setsockopt for more information on the SO_LINGER option on the remote socket.) This error may also result if a connection was broken due to "keep-alive" activity detecting a failure while one or more operations are in progress. Operations that were in progress fail with WSAENETRESET. Subsequent operations fail with WSAECONNRESET.
WSAETIMEDOUT
(10060)
Connection timed out.
A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond

KingSparta, if you don't mind, could you tell me what OS your server is running under? I'm wondering if there isn't a mismatch of some sort happening here. Perhaps certain combinations of Server and Client environments don't play well together?

Thanks. That's interesting. From work (XP Pro) I was able to connect to your server (XP Pro). From a friends house (Win 2000) I was able to connect to my server (Win98SE). I wonder if XP or XP Pro has a problem connecting to Win98SE? Seems like a bit of a long shot but I'm out of ideas.

Well I'm stumped.
KingSparta was able to connect to my server (and play tunes). I was able to connect to his (and play tunes). But when I connect to mine the library downloads fine but none of the songs will play (all MP3).

I didn't read the whole thread, but you must be using Media Server from the same version. In other words, both client and server must be the same build. Many other combinations will work, but you can't be sure.
The version of Windows does not matter.
-
Well smear my ears with jelly and tie me to an ant hill. That must be it. I'll verify from work tomorrow but I suspect a build mismatch could easily be my problem.
Might I suggest that the build number be included in protocol negotiations and a lucid and enlightning error message be generated when build numbers do not match? Thanks!
