Why is my meta data moved? After ripping a CD and importing missing covers or changing a tag, everything is fine. Then when one of these updates occurs, much of this information is moved to unassigned or some of the tag info is lost. Why?

Can you provide any more details?

When ripping CDs you sometimes have to provide images, update the genre, year, etc. Also the artist name is sometimes incorrectly labelled when a selection includes an additional artist. You see, I want to catalogue my collection by album/CD.
After ripping the CD MC17 (or otherwise) wants to separate some of these selections in the visual catalogue or place them in unassigned or unknown. After I organize everything the way I want them things are fine for awhile. Then when I start MC the program reorganizes my collection again. This reorganization is worse after an update.
Needless to say, this causes quite a bit of rework and frustration.

The views in Media Center are designed to work with the metadata.
Before starting the rip, be sure that Artist, Album, Date, and Genre are filled correctly. Select the Enter separate info... checkbox and enter individual track artists when track artists vary (eg. soundtracks, compilation discs, etc.).
If you have albums being split into separate groups in a view, select all the tracks for the album, and ensure that Album is the same. Use the Action Window > Tag area, examine the Album property, and you'll see either a single name, or the word <varies> indicating Album is different across tracks. Enter a single value to correct, and this usually clears it up (I say usually, because there are a couple of other things that cause MC to split albums, such as an album's tracks being in different folders).
MC maintains (more than) two distinct databases: a Main library for your physical files on disk, and a CD library for CDs, DVDs, etc. You'll typically want to set the metadata for the ripped tricks (eg. via some Audio view), and not that of the CD, as the default views in MC focus on the Main database.
You can show both of these databases in a single view so that you can keep Album, Artist, Genre, Date, etc. consistent for both the CD and its ripped tracks. If you assign the correct metadata before the rip, this happens automatically. Otherwise, you can always update either/both of the Main and CD databases. I'll explain more about this if you need/care about it.

Ok. Thanks. Now that I have all of my material ripped the immediate problem is that I have about 100 albums assigned to the unassigned folder (this magically happened after the update to 17). I had more but I have been slowly redoing the tags one album at a time.
Is there anyway to do it automatically for all of the remaining albums and is there anyway to ensure that it doesn't happen again?
Thanks again

The update process would generally import your previous library, so Album tags should have been available. You may still have the previous library available (in an MC16 library directory). You can load it to see what's there.

Can you describe how you did the update?

Thanks. I just selected the update switch on your site and followed directions. I look into the restore feature and see.
