Title: Possible playing only part of a song?
Post by: tangomango on March 15, 2012, 03:35:36 am
Hi there.

I am using MediaCenter 17.0.99 on windows 7.

I wonder if it is possible to select and play a part of a song? In QuickTime you can use markers to choose the beginning and the end of a selection in both songs and videos. Then you have the option to play and even repeat the selection (see attachment).

I am a dancer and when practicing parts of a choreography it is a great help if I could make the song start at for exampel 35 seconds into the song and finish at say 49 seconds.  Also it would be useful to have the option to "repeat the selection".

If this function does not exist can i suggest it for the developers somewhere? If QuickTime has it why can't MediaCenter have it too?!  ;)
Is there a "plugin" for this function?

Suprisingly I can't find any posts regarding this in the forum. ?

The Playback Range library field can be used for what you ask. For example, to play the range from 35 seconds to 49 seconds you can tag  00:35-00:49  in the Playback Range field.

or from 2 min 15.35 s to 3 min 4.71 s:  02:15.35-03:04.71
or from 1 min 30 s to the end:  01:30-
or from the start to 2 min 22.5 s:  -02:22.5
etc.

The most recent MC builds add an option to store a playback range (and also the other tags) separately from the original file to a so called particle file: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Particles (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Particles). You can create a separate album or playlist that consists of the virtual particle files without affecting the original files anyhow.

You can repeat any file, including a particle file, by using the Repeat playback mode: top menu > Player > Repeat > ...

or click the Repeat button to set the mode:

Thanks alot for the great help. Thats a really powerful tool!

Is it possible to have different Playback Ranges for the same song in a playlist?  I am thinking to set it to 00:35-00:49 in may playlist for "practices" but without affecting the song when played from any other playlist for example. Kind of "Playback Range in this playlist" field :)

The particle feature is exactly for that.

You can create several different particles from a certain track and give each particle an unique playback range and individual tags. The particle files work in playlists like any regular files.

Ok, great. Then I will wait for it to come out of beta. Do you know if it will come out already in version 17?

It's in build 106 at the top of this board.

Thanks.

The particle files open a lot of possibilities. Good thinking!
