Title: (Re)build thumbnails
Post by: JanLeysen on April 01, 2012, 04:46:09 pm
After having imported my library (2 Tb, nearly 7.000 albums), I stopped MC 17 (Exit). At that point, MC was still building thumbnails - so probably I should have left running MC until all thumbnails had been built, but I (wrongly?) thought MC would continue building the thumbnails at the following start up. But it doesn't...
How can I get MC to build all (i.e. about 6.000...) missing thumbnails?
It is of course unfeasible to build them "one by one", but even when I ask to "rebuild" a missing thumbnail, nothing happens.
Do I have to do the import all over again "from scratch"?

It will continue building thumbnails.  You can "force" it under Tools/Options/View/Thumbnails.

When I do that, it seems MC is building thumbnails (in the left lower corner, the counter is running) but nothing has changed afterwards. The same thumbnails are missing as before (e.g. when looking at "Albums").

Are you sure you have artwork for those albums?  What does Media Center show in the 'Image File' field for those files?

Where can I find this?

In the tag.

It says "Inside file" - as well for CDs where a tumbnail is visible, as for the others.

What happens if you do 'Right-click > Cover Art > Rebuild Thumbnail' on the files?  Does it cause the thumbnail to appear?

No

I think that means Media Center can't read the image out of the tags.

Could you send a sample file to matt at jriver dot com, and I'll test it here?

Thanks.

Thanks for the sample.  Cover art shows for me with that file.

I wonder if this might be an issue of using a filename that's longer than Windows supports nicely (260 characters).

What's the full filename, including path, of the file you sent (01 Helmuth Rilling, Gächinger Kantorei, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart - Ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich denn.flac)?

Thanks.

Good guess (I had problems with too long filenames: they were "unreadable" as "Flac"). In front of the file comes: Z:\Flac\LOK\B71\...

So the full path is:
Z:\Flac\LOK\B71\01 Helmuth Rilling, Gächinger Kantorei, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart - Ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich denn.flac

That's only like 130 characters, which should be fine.

I wonder if it would be worth deleting all your thumbnails (Options > Tree & View > Thumbnails) and seeing if it helps?  You might also double-check the file system permissions to make sure Media Center can read the files (you could test by playing the files).

This solved this problem! Thanks, Matt.

You mean erasing all thumbnails and starting over fixed it?

Something must have become corrupted in the thumbnail database.  The system is designed to be resilient to corruption, so I'm a little confused by that.

Did the program get forcibly terminated?

Anyway, glad you're running now.

What I did was: erase all thumbnails as you suggested. They all disppeared, and now they are reappearing again (without me giving another instruction...) one after the other (this will take some time: 7.000 CDs) - but several "which were absent before" are present now.
(Could you Pls have a look at my other posting, Matt?)
