Using MC17 -> Air uPNP -> Airport Express
Plays music files just fine to the Air uPNP zone.
So now I get adventurous and try either
1) Cut-n-paste stream URLs from various radio stations into MC
2) Use the ShoutCAST plugin to play radio
All URLs I've tried work when played locally. Only some (a small minority) of them work when played to the DLNA Air uPNP zone.
When a station fails to play, I see the info bar at the top showing either "Waiting" or "Stopped". What confusing is that some (minority of) radio stations do work. All the the working stations are MP3 but not all MP3 stations work.
Could this be yet another Air uPNP problem ? (everything plays locally)
Any help appreciated

I've only tried this a couple of times and only with mp3 streams. It worked for me to the devices I have here for testing. MC will not try to convert a stream so it seems that the problem is likely to be that the renderer device doesn't like the stream format for the urls that aren't working.

Thanks for that info.
I have a hazy understanding of who's doing the 'rendering' here ... is MC the renderer or is it that Air uPNP software ?
If its MC then isn't this a defect ? If Air uPNP is the renderer then I'm out of luck ... that thing is flaky at best.
I guess I could diagnose by trying radio through MC to some other DLNA device like a Squeezebox (with Whitebear).
Feature request: could JRiver license the Airfoil SDK and embed Airport Express functionality directly in MC ?

A renderer is the device that does the final playback.

so to be clear .. in my case, the Air uPNP is the DLNA renderer ?

Yes. Just like WhiteBear is the renderer when it's used for the Squeezebox.
