Hey,
When I rip a CD I get the option to replace already existing files, so coverart, ratings etc are all kept on the new files.
Is there a similar way for importing files? Say I have some Mp3's and I want to replace them with Flacs?
Tx.

I would like to do this too. I want to re-rip all my CD's into FLAC or APE (currently MP3), but don't want to lose the ratings and other tag changes I have accumulated over the past few years...

+1, that would be a nice feature.

I have recently been doing this quite a bit and I use
Rename, Move, & Copy Files
Update database to point to new location...
find what: .mp3
replace with: .flac
This keeps the tags in the library a few need to be changed [file type] for instance so I use "update library (from tags)" to take care of that.
Not automated and a bit clunky but it works well.

This is a recurring discussion, including the idea it would be nice to have a function that would do this automatically. We can now copy & paste tags, but that doesn't address this common need. Various workarounds have been suggested. This (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=68871.msg463579#msg463579) is the method I prefer.

Hm I think that would work for me as well, I'll play around some.
Thanks Rick.

I really hope that such a way of importing and replacing files will be supported one day. Just a semi-automatic way by adding two lists side-by-side, one with old content in library, and one with new files not yet imported, and the ability to drag and drop and a few more options would go a long way of simplifying todays replace operations very much.
I still have tons of albums that's in the process of being replaced, and this would make the job 1/3 of what it is now.

I think everyone knows we're in favour of recurring discussion. ;D
