Title: Moved library files. How to re-link with Media Center.
Post by: dasmodul on April 24, 2012, 10:47:16 pm
Say my audio library files were in E:\Music. My hard drive dies and now the backup of the files are in D:\Music. How do i tell Media Center to auto-lookup all the files of my music library from the new main directory/drive?

Thanks.

Try this:
1) Make a library backup
2) Pick all the files
3) Library Tools > Rename, Move, & Copy Files...
4) Pick 'Update database to point to new location'
5) Use 'Find & Replace' to change E:\Music to D:\Music
6) OK

You might try a few files before doing them all.  Ctrl+Z can undo if you make a mistake.

Thanks guys. This is the simplified version of what worked.
Preface: Music library used to be on K:\  and it died. I have a backup on another driver "J:\".

1) Cntrl+A to select all by Artist.
2) Library Tools > Rename, Move & Copy Files
3) At the bottom where it says replace i typed in K:\  with J:\.
4 - seemed to work great.

When there is not any actual moving of the files, you should use the 'Update database to point to new location' as Matt pointed out. If you just get used to using the replace function, you'll one day end up moving things when you just wanted to correct the content of the database :) AND the positive thing with the Rename and Move function compared to Replace, is that you'll see the result on screen before the job is started.
