When I ask the program to make a change in a stock view (ie "files") i get a warning that i shouldn't change the view but create a new one. But if i create a new view the only way i see to not have the original view listed is to delete it. So why not just change it in the first place - or am i missing something?

The warning is just an advisory, you can change it if you like, and if you get hopelessly lost, there's a "restore stock views" option available to you.
