does anyone know if I connect up any hard drive up to my Tivo Premiere XL any eSATA drive with a cable that would work, or would I need to buy the drive that Tivo offers?

Forget about an external eSATA drive for expansion. You can only use the WD modeled specified by Tivo.
Your best option is to either by a preformatted drive for your Tivo or better yet clone your existing drive to a 2 TB internal drive. This way you retain all your settings and shows and can store your original drive for safe keeping. The process is easy and it is very well documented here. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=455968 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=455968)

I did buy the Tivo Expander 1 TB, And it was easy to set up and the Tivo box did everything to set the drive up.
I am just wondering If Any drive that was eSATA compatible would have worked.
