Title: MC Crashes Watching TV in Extended monitor mode: Fixed in 17.0.160
Post by: Beamer on May 18, 2012, 12:00:19 pm
MC will totally crash/hang the computer forcing a re-boot if an Escape command is sent either remotely or via the keyboard while watching a TV channel with madVR set to Exclusive mode.

The same operation plays nice, pausing the program and returning to the guide if madVR is not in Exclusive mode.

Unfortunately, TV video is not that great when viewed through an extended monitor unless Exclusive mode is active.

This is probably not specific to the 155 release.

Can we have a fix please?

It sounds like madVR can't leave exclusive mode and something bad happens at the hardware level.

This isn't a common problem.

Maybe updating video drivers would help?

I am running with an AMD 6670 and the very latest driver.  This issue is specific to TV channels, an Esc key function with video, news and weather works just fine!

Matt, Are you inferring that you cannot reproduce this problem with a dual monitor configuration set to switch to exclusive mode?  IMHO Most users will not be using exclusive mode as they generally only use one monitor and in addition the default is 'Exclusive Off'  It is 100% repeatable to the extent that I dare not let my partner get hold of the remote while watching TV as a re-boot and a few cross words will shortly follow  ;)

Sending a 'Stop' command instead of issuing a 'Esc' works, surely that is forcing an exit from exclusive mode!

Anyone else using an extended monitor for TV reception that could report their finding regarding this issue?

Sorry.  I tried to test it, but I can't get my digital tuners working in MC (I didn't try very hard).  My analog tuners don't render using MadVR.

What kind of tuner(s) are you using?

This is my tuner card http://www.tbsdtv.com/products/tbs6981-dvb-s2-dual-tuner-pcie-card.html

I should probably mention that the 'Backspace' key will cause the crash as well under the aforementioned conditions.

I can not reproduce it.  madVR exclusive and escape works fine on both my monitors.

Just to be sure, are you using Display View or detached display?  Does it work with one and not the other?

madVR is a little strange with detached display due to how it subclasses the parent window, so it's better to use Display View.

I can't reproduce this on my Radeon 6870 card.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I am using Theater View, I seem to recall the anomaly I found last time around was only present in Theater view so perhaps its the same situation this time around.

As mentioned earlier, Backspace or Escape causes the crash.  I have now tried the last 5 released drivers for the 6670 and all fail in the same way.

I have never managed to get my head around to the various display references. I simply have MC setup to start on the extended monitor and even if I start a film on the primary it will open on the main secondary display.

John thanks for taking the time to test for the anomaly, I am really baffled.  My HTPC only has MC installed on it so I'm pretty sure I do not have any conflicts.

Matt: Just tested in normal view and it works just fine.  It would appear to be a Theater View problem.

Note to self: State the view when reporting issues.
