I have recently installed a 3rd party VST plug-in http://electro-music.com/article.php?t=37687 which is a 2 channel stereo plugin. I have multiple zones setup: a 2 channel zone which has an Asus Essence ST card that feeds a receiver/amp via the S/PDIF out, which has the plugin enabled in DSP Studio. The other zone is a multi-channel setup (7.1) that feeds same receiver via the HDMI out.
How does JRiver handle the 2 channel VST plug-in above when configured to run in the 7.1 channel zone? I cannot see anywhere to route channels to the plug-in. It appears to be active on both the fronts and surround channels with the basic testing I have done. How can the channel routing be controlled?

The VST itself needs to support whatever number of channels you're using.
There's no way to route just a subset of channels through a VST.

Is there a VST wrapper that anyone knows of that can run multiple instances of a plugin?

You can have a look to Plogue Bidule (http://www.plogue.com/products/bidule/) in its commercial version it allows to be hosted in MC it can host and connect other VSTs.
