Multiple US news sources are reporting that legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong has died at age 82. As the spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar mission, he became the first human being to land on the moon and step on its surface — where, as he bounced down from the spacecraft's ladder, he famously said "that's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." NBC News says that Armstrong died today, a few weeks after he received a heart-bypass surgery.

it was amazing to me when we the U.S. landed on the moon, millions of people around the world shared a single passion in those early years of technology and space exploration, and it was not always the me first passion of the cold war.

I've been meaning to read his biography. Have it queued on my iPod. It's fascinating how the man who accomplished what may prove to be the most significant accomplishment of our species before it overshot into extinction could be unhappy.
