May we copyright and sell our skins, and skinning techniques, to JRiver?

Hi rachel,

If your skin is unique, it could be copyrighted.

If your skinning technique is unique, it could be patented.

With so many excellent skins being posted for no more than the name credit, I would be surprised if anyone would ever pay for one.  But that would be up to the prospective buyer to decide.

Rachel,
It is a nice offer.  Thanks.  I have to think about it.

I think copyrighting a skin is kind of silly.  I think that JRiver should be open to using people's skins and visualizations, and should give some small compensation.  Maybe like Readers Digest gives 400 bucks (or whatever) for jokes it uses.  So if JRiver bundles your skin or vis into their software, or posts it on their "official" skins/vis page, then they pay you a few hundred bucks, or give you something worth about that much, like maybe a good portable mp3 player.  I think this reasonable compensation model is fair, because it does take time to set up a good skin or vis.

On the other hand (with my apologies for re-posting
this; but it is one of my favorites):

I think my skin is pretty unique.
I just spent the $20 to register it with the Copyright Office.
Patenting would be too expensive for me.

The skin is drop dead gorgeous.
It had a wonderful combination of irridescent colors,
I'd like to get $10 for it.
Right now it has a pop up window letting the user know that it turns into black and white after 30 days, and a short user agreement. It is pretty foolproof.

May I post it here?

Please post it by all means. I'm REALLY curious to know what kind of graphics work you've done that you think I'm honestly gonna fork out almost 1/2 of what the Media Jukebox costs to pay for a skin.

PLEASE PLEASE POST!!
