Hi all,
I installed MC18 yesterday, but basically whenever I open it it crashes almost immediately! I'm using the Windows 8 RP and I've already tried reinstalling. Any ideas?
Thanks,
phytio

Was that the first time you installed MC18? If you had an earlier version, maybe try uninstalling the earlier version before installing the latest build.
-
Yea it was the first version I'd installed.

Please send a log file to johnt at jriver dot com.

Thanks for the log file. This has been fixed for the next build.Sorry, still looking at this.

Actually, it's crashing before it has a chance to create a log file so all we have is a crash dump which tells us it's crashing somewhere in JRImage.dll. It may be an issue with some of the text font changes we've been making. Can you try again with the next build and let us know if it works? There have been quite a few changes.

No problem, I'll keep my eye on the MC18 thread for the next build. For the record, on the odd occasion I have got as far as playing music, but not often.

Well, I installed the update, and it crashed. When I disabled my plugins it ran for a while without crashing, and I was able to re-enable the plugins (a skin, the sleep timer and the task bar progress plugin) without any drama. When I closed and reopened MC it crashed as it had before.
Does this help identify the problem? I have logging enabled by the way, but no file is appearing on the desktop. Where should it normally appear?
Thanks,

Actually there's more to it than what I wrote above I think.
A pattern has emerged:
1) I open MC and it crashes after a few seconds.
2) I reopen and the same thing happens.
3) I reopen again, and MC tells me to use defaults and deactivate all plugins. At this point it opens and doesn't crash.
4) I close and reopen and we go back to step 1.

Did you try a reboot and reinstall?
18.0.51 is at the top of this board.
-
Hey Jim,
I'm currently on 18.0.51... After an uninstall, a restart, and a reinstall the problem is still there with the pattern I described before, but to add to it, if, when it asks me to return to defaults, I select no, it crashes.
What information can I provide that would help you guys solve the problem? It goes without saying I'm fine using MC17 in the meantime, but I'm excited for MC18 ;)

Try making a backup in MC17 and restoring it in MC18 (if you can get that far).

When you reopen MC at point number 4, the plugins and stuff is loaded again, right? After you disable most stuff in step 3, you can go to the plugin manager. You should remove all of them. Running default skins, and possibly start with a default library. Then you start from scratch and activate one after the other. Restart between activating each thing, and you might find the thing that makes MC crash. Once that is found, it might be possible to fix.
That's at least what I would do.

Firstly Jim, tried that, no luck. I can load MC18, but it crashes twice first. is it odd that the first itme it crashes it doesn't ask me to deactivate plugins?
Secondly MrHaugen, at step 4 it doesn't matter if the plugins are loaded or not, I've tried both ways. If I load the plugins one by one once they're deactivated they all load fine, but MC crashes when I reload. Same if I don't reactivate them.
-
Are there any drives plugged in but not turned on?
-
Nope
-
Are you using the default skin?
-
It's Noire; is that default?

Have you tried to remove the plugins completely? Not just deactivating them? Might be a long shot, but you never know.

Hey! That seems to have worked! Apparently it was the Sleep Timer. Let you know if this was a false dawn.

ps. I see I am sweet 16 now? Is that a reference to something??
-
You came of age... means we can now ply you with cigarettes and alcohol :D
-
Excellent!
-
Sorry for the trouble.
It looks like the new font system is crashing when it uses a font that is not True Type (which Sleep Timer uses).
This will be fixed next build.

No trouble, MC17 was perfectly fine. Beta software should always be treated with cation, but getting MC early lets me see how it develops with each build, Keep up the great work!
