Title: CD copy finished in X minutes X sec...
Post by: yannl on April 22, 2002, 05:00:04 am
I would love to know how many minutes ripping a CD takes. Very useful when trying ripping in different formats...
Would it be maybe possible to add this ? (I know, it's not the right forum and you don't want to add new features on ver 8 anymore, but it's really a tiny one, isn'it ?)

Hello yannl,

More seriously, ripping time of a CD depends on two factors :
1/ The ripping parameters (digital, digital secure, analaog) also depends
on your CD drive performances.
2/ The Encoder you'll be using (time depends on your processor speed)

What I often do is rip|PLS|encode using MPC --xtreme or APE with digital secure.
when ripping|PLS|encoding in MPC I get something in between 3-4 X  meaning that
ripping|PLS|encoding time is about 3 to 4 times faster than the CD playing time.
So it's about 15 minutes for a one hour CD. (Pentium III 1Gig)
Ripping|PLS|encoding in APE will go to 5-6 X because the encoding time is much faster

If you use Digital large buffer |PLS| APE I think you can rip a 60mn CD
in about 5 minutes.

Although you should be aware that using the digital secure rip mode can lead to
long ripping time if your CD is badly scratched.
From my experience (faster to slower)
ripping params : Digital large buffer, digital secure, analog
Encoders : APE, MPC, MP3
When combining ripping parameters, encoder params, CPU perfs, CD drive perfs and
surface quality of the CD the combinations are endless.

I think a figure in between 3-6 X (between 20 mn to 10 mn for a 1 hour CD)
is what you'll get most of the time.

J'éspère que cela aide un peu.

Ciao

Thanks for the information Cmagic.
I can figure out the average ripping time of a CD when I'm using encoder and options I know.
The problem appears when I try new stuff. Today for instance, I wanted to try MP3 VBR with different options. And it's a lot easier if after the file is ripped MJ shows a windows telling me the time it took. Don't U think ?
Btw, in another post I'm asking about the best options to use with MP3 VBR (Latest Lame version) DO you have an idea ? I would love to get rid of WM8, but I found no other format allowing that quality at 128k... and still allowing me to use some portable devices...

So, time for une goutte de cidre et un peu de vent dans les oreilles.

As for mp3 VBR, the best settings I am aware of is the "--alt-presets"
--alt-preset standard will give you an average bitrate of 180kbps
--alt-preset extreme in the 220 kbps
But this might be a bit high if you want to use it for your portable !!

Well, maybe some other folks on the forum will know about these presets beter than me.

You can also visit this site : http://hydrogenaudio.org/
they usually have good discussion and information about mp3, mpc, ogg

For my portable I simply use mp3 128 kbps transcoded from APE or MPC -xtreme.

Voila, pour le moment
