Title: Changing the Artist tag will not update the Artist entry under audio.
Post by: EJR on October 07, 2012, 03:15:05 pm
I started cleaning up my tags a lot of artist got multiple entries because of thing like mixed "&" or "and". or like Michael Jackson     Jackson, Michael.
or other small variations ore misspellings that can occur.

I use an external program for managing my tags and then i use the auto-update.
I noticed however that altho the artist tags had changed and been updated in MC  the artist entries under the audio tag did not.

I wonder if this is working as intended.
I could fix it by deleting the library and creating an new one but it seems a bit drastic. and i'd lose all the info that is MC only like the very usefull  "latest album" among others.
apart from manually fixing all entries is there another way?

thanks in advance

I would look at all the tags associated with a file to see if there is another tag it is pulling the data from. Highlight a file and click on tag in the action window. You can also right click in the window of tags and select "Show all tags"

thanks for your reply

I had another look at one of the albums  and inside MC it had the "wrong" tag in album artist field. However the files themselves have an empty field for album artist.
i think that when cleaning up the tag I deleted the album artist since I only use that for albums with various artist and the like.
somehow it seems that MC did not update/delete the album artist entry after it was removed from the tags.

update

here is the odd thing.
when i manually chance the artist entry in the list it will also change the "album artist" tag this also worked the other way around tho i had to restart MC for the entry to become visible again in the lists of artist.

the big question now is why does MC not use the tags from the files itself.

Check out this excellent page and see how MC uses the predefined tags....

thanks for your reply.
there is a lot of   information to digest in the link you gave me.
a quick scan did not reveal anything i can use for this particular problem. tho there is a lot of interesting information there.
however when selecting albums in album view i found  and option in the context menu:
library tools> update library (from tags).
it kinda froze the MC client (this time i was testing mc18)  but i just let it go in the hope it would unfreeze when done.
it did in the end and reported 3 errors but no specifics on what errors were listed.

I still have some tags to fix. so this time i can pay closer attention and see if i can find out some more.

Yes.. The update Library from tags was the correct thing to do .

I feel your pain, I thought my tagging was perfect until I imported into MC.. it showed my mistakes really fast.. :o

hehe tagging is the never ending story  ;D

further experimentation seems get the same results
when removing the tag from the field "album artist" by replacing it with a blank field (with external tag editor)  MC will not takeover these settings when auto import or importing from tags.
so even tho the files field is empty MC will still show the album artist like it was not removed.

You will have to "Update Library from tags" after changes are made...

Silly question, but why not use MC to edit your tags?

I was going to ask the same thing, but for bulk tagging I still use MP3tag.. I can fly through stuff with the keyboard shortcuts after using it for so long.. But for this scenario it may be appropriate.

I have tagging disabled im mc, prefer standalone tag editors i'm a lot quicker with them.
also for some of my albums i created checksums to verify they are still correct when editing from withing the folders I see if i need to update the Checksum i cant see that from withing MC.
maybe if it were possible to do crc checks for the audio part of the files from within MC i'd can drop the external checksums but  AFAIK that i not possible.
i speaks for itself i tried updating the tags after i changed them. it seems that MC skips "empty tags" or something along those lines.

think i found out why 3 errors occurred earlier. when trying to analyze all my audio i got the message 3 files could not be added because they were not local. I think 3 radio streams also got selected.

As a follow up question, if I edit tags in MC, if I ever used another media centre, would it read such tags?

Thanks

I'm not sure if I understand your question correct
AFAIK if  "update tags if file info changes" is selected in the menu MC will edit the tags that exist in the files. I think its safe to assume these tags are standarized and can be read in other programs unless the tag field is custom made and is not supported.
if you don't allow MC to edit the tags the tags are stored only in MC itself (I assume in the corresponding library)
