I have been using MC to stream .avi movies to my PS3 for sometime now with no problems.
But recently I have been experiencing a problem during playback, what happens is the the video will play with no sound for 4-5 seconds then freeze for 4-5 seconds while only the previous missing sound plays then back to normal. This hiccup seems quite random with its intervals sometimes ok for 20 minutes or so without this happening other times it can happen 3 times in five minutes.
I sometimes get a DLNA error on the PS3 but the movie continues but with the afore mentioned hiccup.
The media server is set up with PS3 options as follows;
Audio - Conversions: Convert unsupported formats
Encoder: MP3 High Bandwidth
Video - Conversions: Convert unsupported formats
Encoder: MPEG2/DVD PAL Stream
Advanced - DLNA checked
DLNA Extra checked
PS3 Compatible checked
I do not get the problem if I stream to my ASUS Transformer android pad.

It could be bandwidth related. Something else using it?

PS3 is connected via ethernet direct to virgin media superhub as is the pc running Media Center. PC is not being used for anything else at time of streaming and no other devices connected to the media server.
So bandwidth shouldn't be an issue

If the server is converting video, CPU on the server could be the limiting factor.
-
What are the codecs in the avi (check MC's video compression field)?
The "convert when necessary" option is very fine tuned for the PS3 (when you are using a PS3 DLNA template). Are you using the PS3 template? If not, you may want to try deleting your generic DLNA server and re-add one with the PS3 template.

Jim - I will check server CPU and let you know
Bob - The codecs are XVID and AC3 also XVID and MP3 (2 channel)
When you ask am I using the PS3 Template - I did check the PS3 compatibility box as outlined in my first post. Is that what you are referring to?

CPU on server running at 16%

The template is different but setting the PS3 compat checkbox if you changed nothing else should be ok.
The convert when necessary option with the PS3 option enabled will play avi containers with mjpeg, dx50 and xvid codecs without conversion.
You could try copying one of the files to your PC and import it into MC and see if that works (having it on the PC will cut the bandwidth used in half and eliminate any possible issues with the media hub.
You can also check while playing the triangle->info selection on the PS3 will display info about the current playing file (a good way to find out if it's transcoding).

I will follow your advice and report.
