Title: folder.jpg not all detected in MC17 & MC18
Post by: lpr on October 25, 2012, 10:14:48 am
Hello,

Here`s something that as been bugging me for a while. All my albums have a "folder.jpg" cover art in their folder so that my Squeezebox can find them. In MC17 some of those album arts are not detected. I have to go in the folder, copy the "folder.jpg" and paste the cover art in MC17 for it to remember it. I've just installed MC18 and all those cover art that MC17 didn't find automatically and that I`ve manually fixed are missing again.

Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance

This reminds me of a longstanding niggle of mine- MC insists on using Folder.jpg when transferring to handheld, which Android doesn't like.
Check the capitalisation of your problem ones. (Both filename & extension)

Looks like capitalisation could be the reason for some cases. But why does MC need to be cap sensitive for those files?..

Dunno why exactly, internal code quirk probably :P
(Windows is out of the ordinary for not caring about case in filenames sadly)

Thanks Leezer for pointing me this capitalisation issue.

I can fix the problem now.

You shouldn't be pointing Media Center at a case-sensitive filesystem.

There was a firmware bug in some NAS devices surrounding this issue.  If you search here, you might find the details.

It may have been the Synology problem (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=74890.0).

If you want to be more precise that was an upstream Samba bug  :D
As you're finding, samba is still a finicky little beast at times, and again it's basically a case of Microsoft not following the standards correctly.

Shifting back to the issue at hand, it's a real pity and pain in the neck that Windows alone chooses to ignore case.
Whilst on a case insensitive filesystem (FAT32 or NTFS for example), case shouldn't matter, I've found cases such as the Android issue I mention above where it does, and I suspect this comes from where *Nix derived code is in use:)
IMHO it's best practice to code for case sensitivity even on a case insensitive filesystem, but obviously your milage may vary!

It may have been the Synology problem (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=74890.0).

My music is on a Synology DS410... So that must be it.

FYI, I just did a clean install of MC17 on a new machine and it detected all my folder.jpg files even the ones with capitalisation issues. All this from my Synology. I don't know what changed...

Take care.
