Title: What Matters
Post by: JimH on April 18, 2002, 04:21:13 pm
Last night, our wren returned to our garden.  From Cuba, I think.  Not bad for what must weigh less than KingSparta's steak tonight.

I had a wren build a nest in my truck grill. I'm such a softie that I won't drive it until they hatch and fly away. I also catch and release mice. (Sorry, King)

Listening to "Timothy Leary" by "The Moody Blues" on ... on ... Arghhh! "WINAMP".

I make birdhouses and let the kids paint them. As nice as they are, and the use they get from the housewrens they don't compare to one the wrens found last year. Out by the dog kennel is part of an old fence. The wooden post at the end just happened to be a handy spot to hang an empty coffee can that was left over from some garden experiment a couple of years ago. Whenever I walked past, a noisy and very excited wren would scold me. After several weeks I happened to walk by again, only this time I could hear little pleading voices from within the can. Careful sneaking, and looking from the bottom up I could see the busy little wrens had made a home from the can placed over the end of an old post. One mans junk is another wrens goldmine. I left the can.

This is all so touchy-feely.

Around here, people shoot skunks, raccoons and crows--with
a 12 gauge, not a Minolta.  Mice are either killed or fed
to snakes.

Damn Republicans.

Scronch,
For some reason I thought you WERE a republican. My sincerest apologies.

In my end of the country, you must be EXTREMELY careful when shooting a skunk. Timing and location is everything.

And I did have a 9' boa when I was younger. Fed it rats. I hate rats. Kept the snake in a glass and wood cage in my bedroom.

I try not to kill anything that is either not dangerous or isn't dinner. If either of those two conditions exist, my NRA side takes over. 9th level Sharpshooter. Codicil: if it's not dangerous and you kill it, you have to eat it. Skunk tastes terrible.

If you only knew how many raccoons have been sent to the big garbage can in the sky by me, you would probably want to put them on the endangered species list. Refrence to garbage can is key. Started when I was a kid and had to clean up after the scourge of the neighborhood on an almost daily basis. We had an old fifty-five gallon drum back then. I tried everything  to keep this vermin out. Best thing turned out to be a 16 gauge slug.

I'd use a 10 gauge if I had one.  Lots of bb's are good when it's not about sport.

I hate rats, too.  Had those in the basement of the house I lived in while in college in Madison.  Big suckers.  I showered down there every morning.  Used to hear 'em rustling around in all the junk the landlord had stored down there.  Not a nice way to start the morning.

Shooting skunks is easy.  Just don't miss.  I kill lots of mosquitoes, and they aren't dangerous, at least around here.  Don't eat 'em, though.

I'm more of a libertarian than anything else, and I've been saying that a lot longer than it's been "all the rage".  Unfortunately, I can't stand slime, so the last national-level democrat to get a vote from me was Jimmy Carter.  Turned out to be a very good human being, but not such a good president.  Anyway, that's not to say that republicans have gotten my votes since.

Hey, maybe I should make some religious comments, too, and really heat this thread up.

Had Subway for lunch with my daughter.

Not listening to anything on MJ right now.  I have a headache, probably from thinking about democrats.

republicans are fun
One day you got one who rip streaming only lyrics
Another day you get a worm-eaten bad cowboy with his wife the grand mother of a maniac Harry Porter
You found one trying to built a pan-europeen neo-fascism party-Lydon Laroche and the P.O.E-
Partie Ouvrier Europeen=Europeen workers party
You get senators eating the young girls they sleep with
And some of them are hardcore ecologists. They kill doctors instead of game
Like this your grand childrens will know what is a bear,a deer,a pheasant
And you have Texas,no need for hallowen................
Enought to heat up this forum,so quiet since so long?

My kids see deer, pheasant, wild turkey (the bird, not the drink) and lots of other wildlife out our window.  We have to drive a few hundred miles north to see bear, though (I like it that way).  And no poisonous snakes here.  But the democrats have told me that if I keep driving my SUV, then the wildlife will all go away.  So I drive a lot around raccoons and crows.

Yeah, I want to try some poke sallet some day.  I had dandelion leaves with lobster tail as part of the 3rd course of a 6 course dinner Saturday night, so why not poke sallet?

Zev, the classic U.S. bayous are down south, like in Louisiana.  There are lots of snakes and gators and other ugly characters down there, so I don't spend much time in those parts.  I guess they'd call me a Yankee, as I live in the northern part of the Midwest (man, that sounds odd from a non-U.S. perspective).  Not as far north as JRiver, though; I may be a Packer fan, but I'm not totally insane.

Thanks for calling it "poke sallet" instead of "polk salad". A lot of people here call it by the latter. It's actually quite good but you can get the same taste by mixing turnip greens and spinach. And you don't have to be so careful cooking it.

Maybe I can work up a little heat by telling you about a bumper sticker I thought of the other day. You've all seen the "Don't blame me, I voted for Bush" stickers that came out when Clinton was elected. Mine would be "Don't Blame Me, I voted for Nader ... Oh, I guess you CAN blame me."

And he spends money like he had a printing press out back.  Here in Wisconsin, we had one of those, a republican named Tommy Thompson.  He built a $1 billion stadium for the dying sport of baseball, *without* allowing a public referendum.  It was a 3-day, non-stop, stay-until-you-vote-our-way, closed-door session.  The public was seething at the result.  One of the five counties that got screwed recalled their republican representative, and he ended up being replaced by a democrat--which gave the dems state control.  The bozo republicans taxed-and-spent their way right out of control.  Thankfully, now Tommy is out of our hair, but sadly for many of you, he is in Washington.

Why do you have to be careful cooking poke sallet?

As far as the Nader bumper sticker, it assumes there is a problem.  Trying to be fair and at least somewhat impartial, Gore would've been the problem in the current environment.  The cabinet he would've put in place would be as clueless as Clinton's.

And remember, Perot did to many what you are claiming Nader did to you.

You're a lot younger than I am.  Jack Kerouac was the same for me.  "On The Road".  48 Hudson, Neal Cassidy/Dean Moriarity, the open road.

Then there's Stuart Little in the wind-up car that belonged to his dentist.  That was pretty good, too.

Scronch,
It was a joke.

The rumor is that if poke sallet is not prepared correctly, it is poison. Kind of like that Japanese blowfish thing. I kind of doubt the validity of that claim. But I'm not willing to try to prove it wrong.

Now THAT is a local joke.

I think the blowfish thing is real.  Here's Dr. Koop:

Misidentification of foods may lead to mushroom poisoning and poor preparation of foods may lead to food poisoning such as the Japanese blowfish dish which if properly prepared produces a "pleasant" tingling but if improperly prepared produces paralysis and possibly death.

Fugu fish. A great delicacy in Japan, and very pricey. Chefs must be specially trained and certified before they're allowed to serve it. All of the liver must be removed; even a trace is lethal enough to kill. A number of diners die each year from fugu posioning. Even if not lethal, can cause irreversible brain damage and strange skull deformities:

Been down there in early spring. Could almost set your watch for an afternoon shower that arrived at around 3 PM. Yeah, it gets muggy there. Ever been in this state in the summer? Several days of temps in the 90's and humidity to match aren't that great either. Can hardly walk out the door without having to catch your breath. Learning what to ignore

Knowing that any idiot can have the courage of his convictions, and working to gain the courage of your confusion.

Understanding the difference between 20 years of experience and one year of experience 20 times.

Refusing to speak baby talk to an infant, broken English to an immigrant, or gibberish to an idiot.

Needing little, wanting less.

Realizing that of the many faces of truth more than a few are hard to look at.

Being content to know that the best we can hope for is to fail in the right direction.

Recognizing substance in a society saturated with semblence.

Eating spaghetti gracefully.

Aspirational only - not attainable in this life. Always wear dark fabrics when eating pasta. Stains blend gently into the material. If you stand in the wrong light, its like being at the far end of a kaleidoscope.

Experience is a series of non-fatal mistakes

If men are so wicked WITH religion, what would they be WITHOUT it? (Ben Franklin)
Title: RE:What Matters
Post by: tullio on April 28, 2002, 04:36:05 pm
Since wickedness is by definition the failure to adhere to religious principles, we would obviously be less wicked without religion.  Same behavior, but it would no longer be regarded as wicked.  (Sorry Ben)

Yes, spaghetti can be eaten gracefully.  Here's how the Italians do it:

1.  Serve it properly--in rimmed soup bowls, not on a flat dinner plate.

2.  Make a workspace in the bowl.  Push the spaghetti from one side of the bowl toward the middle.

3.  With a fork separate a few strands (no more than 5 or 6; two or three for beginners) into the work space and lift them above the bowl with a fork so that the strands hang down on either side of the fork.  Beginners can shake them gently to get them to hang fairly straight.

4.  Lower the strands back into the work space   With the tines held gently against the side of the bowl, twirl the spaghetti around the fork.  Righthanders twirl clockwise, lefties counterclockwise (so the sauce spatters away from you)

5.  With a little practice you will be able to twirl the pasta so that any loose ends hang down no more than an inch from the fork.

6.  Place neatly in the mouth and savor.

NOTE:  Many Italian Americans use a large spoon as a base for the fork when they twirl.  This is considered very low class in Italy.  Since the vast majority of Italian Immigrants to this country were from the lower classes, this is the way they ate pasta.  Let your egalitarian sentiments be your guide for general practice, but learn the fork-only method so that you are prepared for that fancy restaurant in Rome.

I'm going back to the original post but, before I do, I have to say that "Since wickedness is by definition the failure to adhere to religious principles, we would obviously be less wicked without religion. Same behavior, but it would no longer be regarded as wicked. (Sorry Ben)" is an amazingly pragmatic insight. I think Ben would have been impressed. He was a Unitarian, you know.

The wren in my truck grill hatched four wrenlets and they finally flew the coop today. That's ten days from eggs to flying. I get my truck back. Since I took the opportunity to gut the interior, I'll have to wait until I get the seat recovered and put it back in ... after I put the new carpet in and beef up the subwoofers behind where the seat will go ... and install the AIWA MP3 player that I haven't bought yet ... I guess I have a wren vacancy. Ain't life grand?

CVIII,

Life ain't so grand for the wrens and other bug eaters around here right now. Snow and cold puts a damper on bug activity like a slammed door. We are fortunate enough to have Eastern Bluebirds in this area, they even nest in some of the houses I've made. Last night, a male bumped into our living room window. Not enough to hurt himself, but as he sat on the ledge for a second looking in, I couldn't help but wonder what his intentions were. He sure looked like he would rather be inside facing the cat rather than the cold.

The in-laws said they had a hummingbird already. I hope that little bugger can stand more then a few hours of this weather. Nature can be a cruel bastard sometimes.
