I'm new to this forum. Does anyone know whether Media Center 18 will be able to play .w64 files (ie, 64 bit wav files)? I can't see to get these files ot play in MC 17. Thanks!

Welcome.
A 64-bit WAV file should use the .wav extension, just like any other WAV file.
If you rename them .wav, Media Center will fully support them, including bit-perfect playback and tagging (assuming they have a proper RIFF header like a WAV should).

Thank you. Just tried renaming extension to .wav and when I try to play I get message "something went wrong with playback." The same file plays fine in Foobar 2000. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Could you email a sample file that won't play to matt at jriver dot com?
I'm guessing the file is raw (headerless) PCM, but it's just a guess.
What tool is making these files?
Thanks.

We are testing out J River as a solution for our Music Server, which uses a copier that creates a w64 file for playback. I'll email you the file right now and put in the subject line "Memoryplayer." Thanks so much! Sam

I see the file is too large for your outgoing mail server.
Could you put the file on Dropbox, Skydrive, etc.?
Or give me a tool to make a w64 file?
Thanks.

Thanks for the .wav file.
It imports and plays as expected for me when I use .wav as the extension.
Is it possible it's not playing for you because you're sending it to a DLNA zone?
What if you try a local zone? Use DSP Studio > Output Format to make the bitdepth something your hardware supports (this only applies to local zones).

I must be too inexperienced with the Player to make it work. If I look for the file with the revised .wav extension using the explorer under Drives and Devices, I see the folder but no files and when I try to import into library, it indicates that it failed to import files. Is there a simple step by step way I can replicate what you are doing? So sorry to trouble you.
Best,
Sam

Our wiki has a topic called Getting Started. It talks about importing files. That might help.
In Windows Explorer, make sure the file is where you think it is and that the extension is .wav.
You could also search the Audio section of MC. Search is in the upper right corner.

So sorry to trouble you.
I'm sorry it's not working.
I stepped the code in the debugger, and understand better now. W64 is slightly different than a traditional WAV (it's official name is "Sony Pictures Digital Wave 64").
So our native WAV handler does not like W64, and lets LAV decode the file. On my machine, this works (but won't be bit-perfect @ 64-bit). I'm not sure why that doesn't work for you, but it doesn't really matter.
I'm working to add native W64 support. If things go well, I should be be able to post a test build for you in a day or two.
Thanks for your help on this.

That's amazing! We really like your player and would like to use it if we can get W64 compatibility. Best, Sam

W64 support was added to the latest build:

Feedback appreciated.
(p.s. this is import / playback support, but not tag reading or writing support as I couldn't find any specification on how w64 files are tagged)

Hi, thanks so much! This works very well. Remaining question: high resolution w64 files don't seem to play. Is there a setting I need to flag or is this something that remains to be done?
Best,
Sam

Hi, thanks so much! This works very well.
Great.
Remaining question: high resolution w64 files don't seem to play.
What do you mean by "high resolution?" Have you selected an output format in DSP Studio > Output Format you know your hardware will accept?
-
Matt,
Any chance W64 could be built into the convert menu too? I'd also like to see some options on the standard WAV convert (e.g. 16bit) as my portable player only supports 16bit but at 192hz playback.
Cheers
Ade

Hi Matt, by high resolution file I mean a 32/192 file but playing in a 64 bit container. These files play without issue in Foobar. Thanks,
Sam

Did you try adjusting DSP Studio > Output Format?
Could you provide a sample?
Thanks.

Hi Matt, we have everything working nicely with using JRiver in our player. The only areas we have had varied results with relate to metadata. Some of our W64 files and some of our HD Tracks files get tags automatically using your internet retrieval approach under library tools and some get nothing at all. We are trying to figure out how to get consistent results. We are able to utilize your tagging for the W64 files with no problem. Any ideas? Also, a few notes that perhaps we can be in touch with each other on via email:
1) We would really like to be able to use your copier and output to w64 format. We think this would be the best experience for our customers;
2) we would like to release JRiver as our default player. Can we discuss volume licensing along with issues relating to marketing?
Many thanks,
Sam
