Title: Keyboard's play-pause-forward button does not lock to MC with WIN 8...
Post by: akhunaton on October 30, 2012, 04:51:44 pm
...Unless it's focused. Otherwise the buttons do not communicate to MC18 while it's minimized or not the focus. I am using the Logitech illuminated keyboard.

Try the MC setting called "Media Key Mode".  It's under Tools/Options/General.

+1 with this issue too. JRiver "Media Key Mode" does not effectively take over, only the keyboard can.

It's when some (yeah, some... not all) other programs are full screen. The music function keys on the keyboard don't react to MC. It used to do it good.
One thing: programs with which the keys do work are MS Office programs.

Any word on a fix for this issue? I really miss it... like 100 times a day. ::)

Can a MC developer chime in to let us know what we can do about this problem? I just bought bluetooth headphones and those don't work when the app is not focused either. I obviously took this function for granted because I am reminded about it missing all day long.

Yes, please respond. Matt?

Hotkey handling on Windows is really tricky.

I believe MC is properly registering for hotkeys and responding to appcommands.  In other words, we're doing the best we can.

But we've never found anything that always works.  Each version of Windows or driver software moves the ball.

Here's a thread documenting some really weird stuff in Windows 8:

So for now my only advice is to try things:
1) Install (or uninstall) Intellitype
2) Toggle the media key modes in Media Center
3) Explicitly configure your keyboard software to do commands like "MC18.exe /Pause"

Thanks for your answer, Matt. But I do think you've missed the point: my keyboard function-keys (the music keys for audio, like Stop, Play, Next etc.) don't work when the focus is off.
Does that make any sense to you?

That's the issue I was addressing with my post.

Did you try my three suggestions?

3) Explicitly configure your keyboard software to do commands like "MC18.exe /Pause"
Is there a way to do this over a LAN ?

I tried running "\\MEDIA-PC\MC18.exe /Pause" from my web browsing laptop's RUN and that didn't work.

I know if I run an entire MC18 on the laptop then I can do stuff, but is there any way to send the command (or a global key combination) from another PC on the LAN ?

(And yes, this is not specifically WIN8 related, but it has to do with the rest of the content.)

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 and now the quick keys on my Logitech MX 5500 aren't working either. Don't think I was using the latest build before I formatted so was something changed in the past few releases perhaps? Spotify and WMP work just fine with the keys if both are out of focus so I'm not quite sure why J River will only switch tracks with these keys when the player is in focus.

3) Explicitly configure your keyboard software to do commands like "MC18.exe /Pause"

Anyone have an idea how I would go about this with Logitech Setpoint software specifically? I tried toggling the media keys fuction in J River settings and none of the options changed the functionality for the better. I'm not running Intellitype either, so that isnt the source of my issue.

The following thread might help for a workaround:
