Title: Can v17 clients successfully coexist with a v18 master server?
Post by: Vocalpoint on November 08, 2012, 12:48:27 pm
As I get closer and closer to giving v18 a go - I have this question regarding Library Server etc.

I will be installing v18 on my main desktop - where v17 currently resides and where the single instance of the v17 Library Server runs. ALL my clients connect to this server for their content.

Now - to try v18 - even tho it runs parallel to v17 - seems like it's v18 Library Server will have to run as well.

As I am not about to convert any clients to v18 until I give this single instance a good workout - the question is:

Will a v17 client successfully run with a v18 Library Server instance?

Cheers!

Probably not.  You could run one server or the other, but should not run both.

Let me rephrase :)

If I am testing v18 on my main workstation - and the v18 Media Server component is the ONLY one running - will my v17 clients successfully interact with it? Or will a v17 client throw an error due to a mismatched version of the media server component they are expecting to see (v17).

Before I knew that it probably won't work, this is what I did. It works just fine for me. However, I don't make changes to the library on the client - just browse and play back.

Good to know as I do not make any changes either. All clients are in "play" only mode...

However - I am still not ready to start messing around with v18 yet...will wait for a few more builds before starting to kick the tires. I do not want any issues right now with "mixed" version etc...
