Title: Modem broke, no net and no media for the whole house?
Post by: HTPC4ME on November 12, 2012, 10:20:20 pm
Why do we have to have Internet to use our own media?  Now our whole house has no Internet and no media for 3 days until new modem arrives.  All other software that I own that works through network (router) works... JRiver keep trying??

When 12–21–2012 rolls along...  I as a customer  whos paying for a media streaming player would expect that when i kick on my generators,  ill be able to play my media without having to revert back to wmp.

Is there a work around for continuing to use jriver on internet and power outages?

Local files from MC, or are you talking about a client/server setup?

Either way, you can play w/out a WAN connection.

Perhaps you can explain more?

I have full home network,  no internet outside of home...  All clients connect to windows server 2008 library.  When trying to connect  all clients fail to load the library on the home network.

If i goto network on any pc,  goto servers unc shared path choose  a file then they will play.

No device in my home network can connect to ANY server.  They all fail. Only local libraries connected directly to that pc will play,  so because i have server downstairs in closet no one can watch/do anyhing.

If i goto servers,  settings,  media network,  access key,  test connsction.  I get error of... Library  server could not be registered  with jriver,  you need a connection to the internet and it cannot block outgoing http connections from media center.

Try the connection on ip address:52199, don't use the access key.

I figured it out. Dumb question... Sorry exhausted.

Thank you so much!

Can i keep it like this forever?  And still access when im away from home?
Is it as secure?
Assuming not because i wouldnt be able to change password or Can i enable password too? And keep it this way?

Also,  unsure if this is a fluke or what...  But now on clients navigating through theaterview seems 10 times faster...  Things are loading instantly. And playing instantly,  i choose all videos  and all thumbs are already loaded... Usually they load much slower and some times glitch when scrolling through large lists fast. Which i never understood because i have 1000 speed throughout the home.

You can enable authentication and I don't think its less secure.

I'm not sure if you're imagining things or if the speedbump is real. I have never noticed anything different except that connecting is faster on ip adres.

Well i just tried enabling authentication.  And it errors on me again.  Could not be registered with jriver.  You need a connection to the internet.

I just thought of something else,  when i get modem back...  The ip i put in will no longer work because it always changes...  So either i need a static or doman name to actually connect without access key right?

But then if i change to domain name/static and if modem/internet goes out again,  then im locked out again,  and have to make new library for home access with servers home ip?
And then change authentication on all devices again?

Sorry trying to understand this/future proof my connections.

Set it,  and forget it type setup.

You control your LAN IPs.  Give your server a static IP, or if using DHCP, assign a static IP lease.
