I have the JR remote control and MC 18, latest build.
I discovered that when MC is 'on focus' in Windows, the remote control works okay.
However: when another program has the focus, MC just reacts to the remote control's 'next' en 'previous' buttons.
Can this be fixed one way or the other?

No problems with the latest build here.......did it work with previous builds? Have you "learned" the remote in the Options, using the Core Commands for each remote function? Until you do that the remote will not work if MC isn't the focus.........
-
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, the RC did work in previous versions (MC 17). I never have 'learned' the RC how to perform but nevertheless it did work.
Now it doesn't obviously, so I will give this learing thing a go.
I'll get back to you with the results as soon as I've done that.
-
Do you have MC17 and 18 installed simultaneously?
-
Yes, they're both on the computer. Might that be the cause?
-
The MC server catches the remote control, if the server which is running is from MC17 I don't tihnk that will them to Media Center 18.
Make sure all the processes running are from the same version. Close all, kill other processes and only start Media Center 18. Then try again.
-
You could also try changing the "General | Advanced | Media Key Mode" setting.
-
Still not working properly. Here's what I've done so far:
-removed MC 17, so MC 18 is the only one on the pc
- tried the different options under "Tools, Options, General | Advanced | Media Key Mode".
- under Tools, Options, Remote Control, Devices & Options: the only one working is "Microsoft MCE" (the other ones are IRMAN and USB-UUIRT don't work at all)
Might it be something in the Windows settings?
Thanks again!

I don't know if this is related or not, but it has always been the way I'll describe - at least for many versions back.
We have a small screen that we use for Standard View ripping, tagging etc. and any other programs on our HTPC. We have a large screen that we use only in Theater View. We have MC set up so that going to Theater View automatically switches to the large screen.
If we have been doing anything to give focus on the small screen, when we switch to Theater View (large screen) the remote does not work. We must click the mouse on the large screen and then the Remote is fine.
As I said this may be a totally different issue, but is possibly related.

Thanks for your input, Rod, but yes: that's a totally different thing and I don't think it has to do anything with my problem.
My problem is that the remote control for the computer (for play, stop, pause, ffd, rew etc) doesn't work when the focus is off MC.

Hi Mark,
The remote I'm talking about is the Media Center Remote bought from JRiver. It's the one we use to do the things you mention when controlling MC18.

Oh, sorry, Rod, I see. That's the same one I'm talking about.
Still: the problem still exists. I hope someone can come up with an answer.

I too have this problem with mc18 build 90. Using official Microsoft media center remote and receiver. Windows mce disabled in programs and features. Win 7 x64

Bump...
Problem's still there. Anyone an idea how to solve this?
-
I too have this problem didn't happen on mc17!
Any response from Matt?

I also have this issue.
HP MCE remote will work if I run MC in the foreground, but does not respond when run just as a server.
It will however respond to network commands (ie. from J.Remote or other network player) so obviously the server is working - just not responding to the remote.
To get it to respond, I need to run JRMCE in the foreground. This is annoying!
Please provide a fix or workaround that allows the server to respond to IR commands without having to run in the foreground.

This may be a "Media Keys" problem. MC has a setting for this.
It normally works as you expect.

Jim, Does your post here apply to my problem? I could not find anything in settings that would deal with it.
Thanks.
Hope you have a very Happy Easter!

I can't find that setting either.

This is a problem that has been bugging me since I started using MC last September.
I started a thread about it here http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=75185.msg511101#msg511101 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=75185.msg511101#msg511101)
...in which I post a possible workaround to maintain focus. However, it is just a workaround and I still very occasionaly have to use the mouse to regain focus.

I find I have this lost focus problem a lot too. It often arises if the pc has been on a while particularly if say MC has been playing something, usually I see it with video, which has been paused and left unattended. Don't know if these symptoms help. It is a pain as the mouse is always out as well as the harmony.
