Title: Source bitdepth setting doesn't affect output
Post by: bannonb on November 15, 2012, 10:23:09 am
Hello:

Using Win 7 and a 24 bit USB DAC.

Using WASAPI or WAVE I use the DSP page to set bit depth...assuming that it will affect bit depth output.

When I set bit depth to "source" then play a 16 bit mp3 I see the audio path screen says it's playing at 24 bit.

Are there other settings to use which will make 16 bit source files send 16 bit output to my DAC?

-do I really want that or would you suggest upsampling to the 24 bits which is seemingly what is happening here???

I am thinking that un-upsampled output would be preferable.  Is that the case?

Thanks,

BannonB

You can read more about bitdepth in the wiki (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Bitdepth). If you have a 24 bit DAC, then it requires 24 bit output from JRiver. Going from 16 to 24 bit isn't changing anything. It is only adding more zeros to the right of the decimal place in an existing number.

Upsampling has to do with sample rate, not bit depth.

OK, thanks.

I wasn't sure how that worked.  I'll take a look at the wiki.
