Title: Genres
Post by: Ny40Male on April 15, 2002, 06:00:35 pm
Hiya

ive read all or most of the Search Posts and am curious
but is there anyway to say for instance
have a program or a website tell you
for instance that
10,000 Maniacs - (Genre) Rock
ACDC - (GENRE) Hard Rock
Garth Brooks - Genre (Country)

i like the option in the new version of MJ that allows you to play by Genre
but i dont have anything tagged being i never wanted to tag them wrong
is Frank Sinatra (Oldies) or (Whatever)

i appreciate the help as always
Thank You

not what you want to hear:

categories are subjective

many artists record music from a variety of genres on a given album, and fluctuate among many genres over their career, making it difficult hard to pick one single "genre" for any artist

try http://www.allmusic.com

for each they typically list several genres and from which you can select one that suits you

Frank Sinatra is classified as: Vocal Jazz, Traditional Pop, Standards, Soft Rock, Pop, Swing, Ballads, Show Tunes

I think that they missed a few potential categories for him

so basically it leaves it open to one's judgement
and for 1000 other people to complain
THAT YOU DID IT WRONG
thanks for the help

>>>it leaves it open to one's judgement

could it really be otherwise? might as well ask for the definitive answer to the question, "who was the most influential rock band of the 60s?"

tell the individuals' theoretically complaining that you've chosen the "wrong" genre for an artist to "get their own boat"

You could have one genre (like "music") for all your songs, and use the custom boxes to sort the music by some less subjective criteria, such as "mood," or songs mostly preferred by males/females"

Lastly, if one were to object to a genre that I had chosen for an artist, I would invite them to write an essay explaining how their position was superior to my own, and tell them that once submitted, I'd review it and consider whether a change was warranted before deciding against their recommendation.

The committee gave you genre 107, Booty Bass, to cover any problems.
