Title: Is it possible to have different video quality settings in zones?
Post by: terrym@tassie on December 05, 2012, 09:11:17 pm
Hi,

Is it possible to have different video quality settings in zones?
I would like to have Red October standard in one zone (for laptop display that can't run Madvr) and Red October HQ in another zone (for HDTV via laptop hdmi that can run Madvr).
It seems at the moment that if I change video quality it affects all zones. Is this correct or am I missing something?

I don't understand how if you are using the same laptop that the monitor affects whether or not you can use madVR. The processing is done by the laptop and should be monitor independent.

Don't know... maybe laptop's internal screen is 1080p and HDTV is just 720p?

Well, It would be useful for me, my laptop resolution is 1366x768 and sometimes I would like to use my HDTV. In some case the GPU of my video card has trouble upscaling movies in 720p to 1080p

Just to clarify- the Laptop is a Dell XPS1702X with I5 CPU- the laptop display is driven by an Intel graphics adapter with a max resolution on the display of 1600 X 900.
The external monitor is is driven by an Nvidia GT525M adapter via the hdmi port.
It is not possible to select the Nvidia adapter to drive the laptop display.
If Red October HQ is used with the Intel/Laptop screen it drops loads of frames and then Madvr crashes.
It of course works absolutely fine with the Nvidia GT525M adapter and a Sony 1080P tv connected to the hdmi port.
So that is the problem- it would be nice if I could have a laptop zone with Red October standard and a HDTV zone with Red October HQ just to make switching easier.
I don't use the laptop display much for viewing video but I am occasionally on the move so I was just curious as to whether it was possible to set up suitable zones.

Thanks for all the replies to date.

I have got my Dell Xps 17 to work with Red October HQ on the laptop display by setting MC 18 to run with Nvidia GPU in the Nvidia control panel and then in the Madvr settings unselecting "use a separate device for presentation (vista and newer)" in the Rendering-General settings.
Nice smooth HQ video on the laptop screen now!
So there is now no requirement to change quality between zones.
I should have checked everything before I posted this thread- Doh! :-[

I would like to know the answer to the OP's original question. Is that the way Zones is supposed to work or is it a bug? I would like to do the same thing (but for a different reason). I tested with 18.0.120 and it still does as the OP reported.

Thanks.

The workaround I use is to set Video Mode to Advanced - Custom and inside the custom setting the settings are zone specific, so I set my living room zone to use EVR and my home theater to use MadVR.

Never got an answer to why the Video Mode setting itself isn't zone specific when I asked about it some time ago.

It's by design that the video mode is not zone specific.

However, we'll consider changing it if the community thinks it would be better.

Feedback appreciated.

I've discovered it is possible to have RO standard in one zone and ROHQ in another. Select video mode advanced-custom, then in the settings select " Start with the following rules"- put RO standard. Then select another zone and put ROHQ in the "Start with the following rules". It will then switch between RO standard and ROHQ when you change zones.

Confirmed. Combined with a Zone Switch, works like a charm  :D.
