Title: zone bundling or several dacs simultaneously - crazy idea
Post by: eddyshere on December 16, 2012, 04:43:26 pm
Would there be any way to output different channels of a track to different dac's ?  ? ?
Sounds crazy but I was wondering if for a multichannel sacd I could use 3 stereo dacs ?
Just asking...

You could link multiple zones and configure channel routing for each. However you need the audio output settings configured exactly the same and even then things get out of sync easily not to mention there's not really an easy way to change volume without having to adjust the volume on each dac separately.

In short a software solution to link multiple devices is not recommended. Something like the e18 8 channel dac that Matt review earlier this year would work http://www.exasound.com/e18DAC/e18DACOverview.aspx depending on your budget.

Possibly something like this is more in the line of what you're after http://mytekdigital.com/storeus/index.php/8x192-adda.html the price isn't exactly small change but then I get the impression that multichannel dacs are something of a niche market at the moment. I am limited in my knowledge so hopefully one of this forum's wiser members can help out.

How would you clock this? You will need a external world clock reference that time aligns the dacs. Alternatively, use world clock out on one dac controlling the other two. Why not save yourself the hassle and buy a multichannel dac, like a Lynx Aurora 8 or 16?

Multichannel dacs are maybe a niche market for the home market, but look towards the pro studio products. The professionals have been using such gear for years. No nonsense, excellent quality equipment with quality drivers and configurability.
