  • What exactly does "Maximize hardware volume on playback" do? I.e. which particular hardware are we talking about here?

The playback hardware.

Justification for the feature here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=76614.0

  • In what respect does "Mute on Start" differ, in practice, from "play silence at startup for hardware synchronization"?

Mute on start was an experiment to see if it helped the DSD/PCM transition click on some DACs.  I was working with a manufacturer when I added it.  The option didn't help, so it's possible we'll remove it at some point in the future.

Thanks for that - it's so long since I used any internal sound hardware (I use USB) that I was wondering how you were planning to control my hardware....

...OK, you can adjust the volume of some USB audio hardware, but that can be a dangerous game, a bit like the gas pedal getting stuck down  :o
