Hi friends, I’m looking for a new soundcard for my Windows 7 PC. May be you can give me some suggestion which one works perfect together with Media Centre – price is not really relevant.
What I would need as minimum:
1 line input
1 line output
Tos link (optical) digital input and output
Chinch digital input and output
Most important: 7.1 digital output in raw format for external decoder (Denon AVC-A1HD)
Additional: ear phone output.
Thanks in advance :)

What graphics card do you have? if it has a HDMI output and you can cover the '7.1 digital output in raw format' with it you will have more options to choose from for the discrete sound card.
I only know of a couple of discrete sound cards with HDMI audio, the Azuntech X-Fi HomeTheater HD (http://www.auzentech.com/site/products/x-fi_hometheater_hd.php) & the Asus Xonar HDAV (http://www.asus.com/Multimedia/Audio_Cards/Xonar_HDAV13_Deluxe/) Range

Dear Micromecca thanks for your quick reply.
My graphic card is a ATI Radeon HD 4800 with one HDMI output. How can i send the digital sound signals over Media Center to my receiver?

Hi Stefan, I think that all of the 4800 series discrete cards support HD Audio over HDMI, you can confirm this by selecting your specific model HERE (http://www.amd.com/US/PRODUCTS/DESKTOP/GRAPHICS/ATI-RADEON-HD-4000/HD-4800/Pages/ati-radeon-hd-4800-overview.aspx) and checking the specs.
If it does support HD Audio over HDMI, it is simply a matter of connecting your graphics card to your receiver/processor via HDMI and setting the output device to your graphics card in JRiver, it should be labelled 'AMD HDMI Output' (I also recommend using WASAPI - Event Style) if possible.
good luck 8)

That looks interesting, but I noticed at 8-channel it can only do 16-bit @ 44.1 kHz.
If you are considering analog, these threads might be worth a look:

Dear my friends, thanks a lot for your fast and comprehensive answers. This weekend I will try to send the digital sound over the HDMI output and i will keep you informed.
Today I bought also a cheap USB soundcard -

Let’s see if Media Center is able to send the sound as 7.1 to my external decoder.
These entire tests are coming up as Media Center and my old soundcard maybe are not working perfect together – or I´m not able to make the correct settings. I love this program here but as long as I don’t get this feature running it’s somehow worthless for me (sorry).
