Title: (SOLVED) Automatic subtitle option
Post by: GuidoW on January 02, 2013, 04:53:49 am
I'm watching movies in German (my native language) and English.
In english movies I like to see English subs - to improve my English and to better understand the dialogue.

Perfect would be to have options like
- first priority language (german)
- second priority language (english, if german is not present)
- Show subtitle in second prio lang (english), only if audio is second prio (english)

I don't want subs when german audio is selected.
I want english subs if audio is english.
Preferably automatic.

Would this behaviour suit anyone else?

I know Matt is keen on the idea of an automatic subtitle downloader. But I do not know much more than that. I'm hoping that a system like this will be added soon.

So: +1

Somehow i think he more refers to subtitles which are already present in the file, i didn't read "subtitle downloading" out of the OPs post.

LAV Splitter can already do such kind of subtitle selection, but MC overrides it with its own language choice in RO mode, so ... you could go custom mode!

Aha. I see... Misread that somewhat.

Nev - is your subtitle selection system similar to Halli Splitter 's ?  I know that has a system similar to what the OP was requesting.

By the way, for anyone who is reading this thread and wants to know how to do the "custom" thing suggested above, you have to redownload the LAV splitter separately and install it, and then in MC18, where you have the Red October options, you can then select Custom which allows you to select the LAV splitter you have just downloaded, and set its options.   Same for other filters.

thx nevcairiel and kstuart
will give the custom LAV splitter a try tomorrow.

Indeed, my post is about the proper selection of the subtitle, not the downloading.

Not quite as what the OP wants, but I watched The Avengers the other night and during the Russian speaking scenes with the Black Widow there were no subs - I had to manually choose the last option to get them only during foreign speaking bits.

I would have thought these were burnt in subtitles, or ones that would be on by default?

They definitely aren't burnt-in, very few are. Most are supplied as pgs streams with the audio tracks

What format were you watching - mkv rip, straight bluray?

If mkv rip - providing the subtitle stream has the 'forced' subtitle stream included and the 'forced' flag is set, then MC will playback subtitles for (I presume, non-default language parts). One other setting that has to match (correct me if I'm wrong Nev), is the language of the subtitle track and the default language chosen for MC (Tools, Options, Video, Subtitles & Language).

Can't comment on straight bluray disc playback as I rip all mine.

Excellent solution nevcairiel, exactly what I wanted, thanks a lot.
