I've searched and can't find any references...
What are the gold stars under one's user name on the Forum, and why do they increase and decrease from time to time ?
-
Related to the number of posts?
-
Could be related, but they do decrease, while the number of posts doesn't...

Really? I don't think I've ever seen that.
If so, Jim is probably screwing with you. ;) ;D

SMF (and also YaBB) have a post count based star system, as well as member groups. There are modification packages to change behavior. The forum software is built to deal with 5 levels, each based on post count. Once a user reach a certain post count, the user's level increases. Stars are related to that.
Here's a screenshot of how this is managed (in a new version of SMF):

I haven't admin'd one of these forums in a long time now, so don't have the exact details handy. I'm not sure if your stars decrease as soon as you jump a level.

On Interact, at least, and every other SMF forum I've used, the stars == the "level". But it was a long time ago that I was below 5 stars, so I'm not sure.

Aha ! I did see it !
In one thread in the MC18 Forum is:

Note five stars and Posts 62 and four stars and Posts 384.
So, the stars are not proportional to the posts.
