Title: Playing DVDs
Post by: porthacking on January 28, 2013, 03:27:10 am
Hi All,

I have just ripped my entire CD collection.
I would like to rip all of my DVDs so I can access everything through MC. I think it is a great program.
I want all of the DVDs to play exactly as though I had put them in a DVD player. I have a family member who is hearing impaired, so I need access to all of the subtitles etc. I have another who likes all of the extra features.

What is the best way to do this?
I don't want to add any lossy compression and I don't really care about the size of the files.

Thanks for any suggestions!

MC has a certain amount of ripping capability for DVD's built in.
If MC can't rip them then I tend to use dvd fab hd decrypter - which is free.
I use both of them to basically just grab an exact copy of the content including DVD Menu's, adverts, etc as VOB files.
I don't use compression.  It's fairly quick taking in the region of 15-20 minutes to rip a disk on my 7 year old machine.

MC imports them and neatly shows each movie as one file.  I then use Media Centers tools to grab posters for each movie.

It does take a fair amount of space usually around 5-7gb but space continues to get cheaper!
I've got around 300 discs stored this way.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, this is really helpful!!

So to clarify, use MC or DVD Fab HD decrypter to rip. This leaves everything intact as a single file and MC can grad posters
from the net somewhere?
MC or DVD Fab leave it as a .vob? Is there any settings I need to be aware of?

Thanks again for your help.
