I'm in a trial with j river mc 18. I am completely satisfied as a music player, but i have problem with videos.
Video playback show very noticeable stuttering. I'm not sure how to explain it, it is not like frame drop, it is like some horizontal separations that makes top and bottom sections somewhat misaligned. It feels like i can see top down scanning ,and since it is rendered too slow, it gets misaligned during moving parts. It is particularly visible during panning scenes (ex: opening scene of Brave) or fade in/out scenes. It occurs with different source videos, be it 480, 720, 1080p. So it doesn't seems to be a lack of gpu power, but maybe a refresh rate problem, but i'm no expert.
I'm using red october standard. All default video settings. Audio bitstream = yes via hdmi. CPU is an i3 2100 using onboard graphics.
My desktop intel's refresh rate is 59hz. Source videos are 23.98fps. I tried playing with the automatic refresh rate change in MC, to make it match the source fps, but it make it worst, the top to bottom scanning is even slower.
Here is MC benchmark results:
Running 'Math' benchmark...
Single-threaded integer math... 4.389 seconds
Single-threaded floating point math... 2.914 seconds
Multi-threaded integer math... 2.379 seconds
Multi-threaded mixed math... 1.664 seconds
Score: 1675
Running 'Image' benchmark...
Image creation / destruction... 0.234 seconds
Flood filling... 0.460 seconds
Direct copying... 0.775 seconds
Small renders... 1.306 seconds
Bilinear rendering... 1.444 seconds
Bicubic rendering... 1.365 seconds
Score: 3939
Running 'Database' benchmark...
Create database... 0.502 seconds
Populate database... 2.786 seconds
Save database... 1.406 seconds
Reload database... 0.187 seconds
Search database... 1.272 seconds
Sort database... 1.148 seconds
Group database... 0.682 seconds
Score: 2693
JRMark (version 18.0.106): 2769
Note that playback using XBMC or Media Browser is perfectly smooth, no problem with those players.
Note also that I can see the same stuttering in Media Player Classic, and also on the web streaming videos. I may be going crazy but I could swear there was no stuttering before installing MC...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What verison are you using? MC18.0.128 is available at the top of the MC18 board.

Upgraded to MC18.0.128 but still the same issue.
Also upgraded my intel graphics drivers but still no luck.
Seems to be related to LAV filters as my Media Player Classic-HC is also configured with LAV filters.

In video settings try changing the hardware acceleration setting.

Thanks but not any better :(

I have the i3-2100 and it is too slow to play Blu-rays in RO-HQ.
You can play them in RO-STD. I wanted to use the "High Quality" settings so I installed an nVidia 450 and have not had issues since. Also, use WASAPI- Event Style under audio>output mode unless you have a reason not to.

Using RO-STD and WASAPI- Event Style, I've followed Assassin htpc guides.
I don't mind getting a discrete gpu for using RO-HQ, but would it really fix my issue, which seems more refresh rate related than gpu power related.

Am experiencing exactly the same issue on a HD4000 based HTPC (panning scenes lines are completely jagged). If I add a discrete card (AMD 5750) it's all gone...this started with the few last 2 or 3 ?? releases of MC 18.

This is video tearing and is often caused by video drivers. When you add a discrete card, you are of course, also leaving behind the drivers of your old onboard video too. I started getting video tearing a couple of months ago after a Windows update, and updating my nVidia drivers fixed the issue. The drivers were fine before the Windows update.

Just to let you know that I did format my pc and on a brand new windows installation, jriver plays video perfectly, the issue is gone. ;D
It was probably a collateral consequence of all the video players I tried.
