Title: audio output format for 2.1 setup
Post by: codpiece on February 05, 2013, 11:30:50 am
I have a 2.1 setup with no receiver or pre/pro.  Both my main speakers (Mackie HR824) and sub are powered.  I use the analog out from my HTPC directly into the speakers.

I select 2.1 in the Output Format and JRSS mixing is On.  The only mix to 2.1 for stereo sources is Unchecked and the move center to FL/FR is greyed out (unchecked).  Subwoofer is set to Silent and I use Room Correction for bass management.

I think that's the correct setup for my 2.1 system.

My question is why does Audio Path say convert from 2/6/8 channels to 6?  Shouldn't it say convert to 3 channels?

2.1 will use a 6 channel container with the 2.1 channels filled and the other 3 channels silenced.

This is because hardware rarely supports communicating with it in 3 channel mode.

That makes sense.  Appreciate the answer, thanks.

I think you brought up a good point that Audio Path would be a little more clear if it said something like "2.1 (inside a 6 channel container)".

We don't currently have a way to do this easily, but it would be a nice addition.
