Title: Unable to stream .mts and .m2ts to WD TV Live SMP [Fixed 18.0.136]

WD TV Live Streaming Media Player Firmware 1.12.14
Wired Gigabit network

Hi,

I recently loaded our home videos into MC.  This introduced .MTS and .M2TS files to my library.

I'm unable to play .MTS or .M2TS files on the WD TV live unit via DLNA. I can play the same files from usb storage connected to the WD Unit and in MC.

Using the WD TV Live unit as a player I get the following error "Unable to play the selected file.  Please see the user user manual for a list of supported file formats"

Using the WD Tv Live unit as a renderer I don't get an error.  The WD unit indicates it's a renderer ("This is sharing data from Windows"), but the video never appears

DLNA Server Config

• Video = Never convert
• DLNA checked
• DLNA Advanced checked
• Log File requests checked

I have video set to Never convert as the rest of the video library is .MKV & they play OK.  

Looking at one of the files in Media Info shows:

• Format = BDAV
• Video Format = AVC, Codec ID = 27
• Audio Format = AC-3, Codec ID = 129

I'm unsure if this is a problem with the WD unit or MC or something in my set-up / files.

I'm happy to provide logs / wireshark traces.  I'll probably post on the WD site as well.  I haven't upgraded the WD firmware to 1.13.18 due to reported issues with it

Any one else have this issue or suggestions to test further / address?

Playback of various media types in DLNA is often more restricted by the various gatekeeper functions than playing off of media.
It could simply be a problem with the mimetype, there are a couple of possible ways to present m2ts files.

Can you run device spy from the uPNP tools for developer and invoke the getprotocolinfo function and see what the sinkprotocolinfo returns for possible m2ts mime types?
You could then test the theory by setting the mimetype override in the advanced options and put in a mimetype from the sinkprotocolinfo to see if it will then play (you might have to match the DLNAType for that same entry as well).

I enabled MPEG video mime type override & set it to video/vnd.dlna.mpeg-tts and the DLNA one to mpeg-tts

I can now render and play the .mts & .m2ts on the WD unit via DLNA. 

A couple of questions.

• Specifically What do I need to report / ask WD to do?
• What does setting the mime type override actually do & what does it mean to streaming my non .mts & .m2ts video files

Setting those over-rides just hard-codes those values into all of the content directory entries for every video file.
It depends on the device whether or not they make a difference. Some devices ignore one or both of the entries, some require both in a particular format.
For nearly all devices, they are just gatekeepers, the underlying software player, often VLC, will play just about anything you give it on devices like the WD based on reading the file itself (like it would if it was on local or smb storage).

Thanks for the clarification. With the Mime override set, the WD unit cannot play my other content, so not a good long term solution.

I tested remuxing the .mts & .m2ts files as MKVs (using mkvmerge) & the the WD plays them fine without Mime override.  It's pretty simple task to remux all our home video files so will employ this option.

How do I determine what mime type MC is presenting to the WD unit when override is turned off (I will report on the WD forum - they might address it one day)

Well, that's interesting... It is paying some attention to at least the mimetype then.

After taking a look, I don't really like what we are putting in for that.
I'm going to change it and PM you a test version.
In the meantime, could you try the mimetype override stuff to test the following on one of those files?

mimetype: video/mpeg
DLNAType: AVC_TS_HD_AC3

and
mimetype: video/vnd.dlna.mpeg-tts
DLNAType: AVC_TS_HD_AC3

Tested with MC 18.0.129 and WD 1.12.14

Files played and rendered without an issue
