Title: Win 2k: MJ 7.2 works only for Administrator
Post by: Lars on April 08, 2002, 01:42:16 pm
Hello,

I've installed MJ 7.2.280. I found that no encoders worked in the trial
version. Hence I registered and since then, everything runs fine as an
administrator. When I login as a regular user, however, I can not access
any encoders other than WAV. Playing files encoded as administrator leads
to a memory access violation of MJ and the program is terminated.

Any help?

Lars

This is true for 8.0.239 as well. I was not able to install MJ without administrator permission (got an error installing one of the DLLs). After re-installing under the administrator account, I was not able to run the player under any non-administrator account. As a temporary fix, I created a shortcut to MJ specifying that it should be run under a different account (I have to enter the administrator password when I run MJ.) It's a pain and not secure.

Another W2K issue is that MJ defaults to ripping files to a node under the All Users account. This was probably intended to give all users access to the music (and may be one reason administrator permission is needed.) I don't think MJ should assume the ripped files go in the All Users account -- they should go in the current user account.

Mmmh,

when is the MJ supposed to work correctly under Win2k? I do not think
that this behavior is acceptable to me, especially not when having
paid the registration fee.

As a workaround: how do I specify to run MJ under the admin account
when logged in as a normal user?

Thanks,
Lars

Try installing MJ for each user.

Install MJ for each user? How? One needs admin permission to do the install, and then admin persmission will be required to run MJ.

To answer Lars question, create a shrotcut to MJ, right click on it, select properties, and check "Run as different user".
