Title: missing hovering control buttons
Post by: yannis on February 17, 2013, 08:07:56 am
Hi

In previous versions when MC was minimized and I hovered over the taskbar icon, there was some info of the song currently playing and minimal button to stop/RW/FF. In version x.129 I only get a balloon with the Artist-Title info. Has something changed in MC or did I change some option without realizing it? If (A), could you please reinstate the control buttons, as they were very useful?

This is happening to me as well. It works sometimes, and if they have disappeared and I close & re-open MC18 it works again.
I'm not getting file progress showing up on the taskbar at all though, and while playing, the play button never changes to a pause one.

I don't believe the tray icon has never had controls, but you can right-click.

The task bar icon (the big icon on the bottom in Windows 7 and newer) should show player controls when you mouse over it.

Matt, I think he's right...When you hoover over the MC icon in the Windows Taskbar to get the little thumbnail of the player, you get Play Controls (if something is currently playing).

This doesn't seem to be working here either.  EDIT:  Hah!  I looked it up but didn't read to the end, and did it to myself again.  I don't even use the Tray icon and it is confusing.

But while you're in there...  ;) ;D

This confused me and other people before too (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=60182.0).

MC does NOT have Play controls when you right-click on the Win7 Taskbar Icon, but it does if you hoover over it.  While, if you right click on the Tray Icon there are play controls, and if you hoover over it, there aren't.

I don't like hoover-activated tray icons, but maybe just if you had some of the right-click options installed in the Pinned taskbar icon, it'd help lessen the confusion.

By the way... To even see the tray icon I screenshotted up there, you have to have the Minimize to System Tray option enabled in Options > General, so most people probably don't know it is there.  More people would try right-clicking on the Taskbar icon, I think.

This confused me and other people before too (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=60182.0).

Sure did.  And it confused me again.

To the original posters:  The problem is probably that you have your Tray Icons enabled via Options > General > Interface > Minimize to System Tray.

When you do that, for whatever reason, you get these:

But you no longer get these:

Matt, is it supposed to be like that?  That seems silly, but that's the way it is now.

I don't usually use the Minimize to System Tray option.  But I knew about it and knew about the right-click menu, so I figured I'd demo it and grab a screenshot.  So I turned it on.  But then I decided to also get a screenshot of the Taskbar Hoover controls, and they weren't there.  So, then I got confused.  I knew there was a Taskbar Icon hoover-menu, I use it sometimes.  In fact, I knew I'd made a screenshot of it before demoing it (I remembered drawing the circle on it, oddly, and how Jim swooped in there with his simply attached picture while I fiddled with mine in Photoshop).  And so I dug into my archive and found that old thread to grab the screenshot.  Then, I edited my post above before posting it and changed my "this is how you hoover, and this is how you right click" comment into a "Matt, I think this is broken" comment.

Then, after I posted, I went in and turned the System Tray option off.  And voila, my on-hoover Taskbar play controls are back.

So... I'm not sure if it is or isn't broken.  But why is it like that??

To go back to my original question, the problem resolved itself when I rebooted; everything works as before now.  ?  :)

If I may offer my two cents, I find this feature very helpful and I'm only missing an even quicker popping up and some more detail in the info balloon (maybe the option to customize it?)

I haven't had any problems with the controls disappearing recently - that I've noticed - so it seems to have been resolved here too. It seemed to be caused by switching between audio and video playback a lot.

I would still really like to see progress appear in the taskbar though:
(http://i.msdn.microsoft.com/dd942846.fig05_L(en-us).gif) (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd942846.aspx)

And it would be even better if we could get the album art displayed when mousing over, rather than a thumbnail of your library. Same thing with video - being able to see the video playing rather than the library view would be great.

(http://i.msdn.microsoft.com/dynimg/IC420540.png) (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/dd378460(v=vs.85).aspx#thumbbars)

The play button is still always stuck on "play" for me too, it never changes to "pause" when something is playing.

And I don't know if it is possible via the taskbar previews, or  task functions (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/dd378460%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#tasks), but it would be great to have some way of quickly rating the currently playing item in the background.

Still happening in 18.0.144:

Restarted MC:

Note: this was playing a track, though the "play" button is still not updated to a "pause" button.

Still disappearing in 164. :-\

I've seen these go away too.

It would help if we could figure out something that triggers it to happen.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to narrow it down to anything. It seems to happen more often when MC18 has been open a while, and I have switched between music and video. (and it was happening before I set up separate zones for each)
At first I thought it might have been ISO playback for videos causing it, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Hi all, I was out of town for a while and just saw this; I too still have this issue and it's quite unpredictable. ISOs should be unrelated as I never use them, and it certainly happens even in sessions when no videos are played. I'm 99% positive that it has smth to do with some other Win function, but can't put my finger on which one.

Coming next build:
Fixed: Windows 7 taskbar button playback controls would sometimes not show up.

We were waiting for a message that Windows didn't send sometimes.  No idea why, but we just run a timer and keep trying to setup the buttons until it works (normally only a second or two into the run of the program).

Sounds like the next build is going to have a lot of good fixes in it. Great work!

Well, it's happening a lot less than it was before, but the controls just disappeared again. :(
All I've been doing is playing DSD files for the past few hours. (a mixture of DSF/DFF)

I wish I had something more to add, other than to say that it's just happened again for me in 18.0.180:

This seems to be happening a lot more frequently again in recent builds. It's happened several times today already.
I wish I could pinpoint something that is causing it, but it seems to mostly happen when I just have MC running in the background playing music.

Just CD album covers - but not my CDs, junk pop stuff that's also in the library. (was in the recent imports view)

That's less interesting.   :P

Hah.  I was only kidding.  The blur effect did immediately give that impression though.

Too much free time that evening I suppose. I just didn't think the covers were relevant to the issue, so much for that.  :P

or just a healthy bit of paranoia  ;D

It still happens to me too, esp. after using smartlists and editing tags.

Still happening in 193 - this time it was less than 2 minutes into playback, right after opening Media Center, after restarting my system.

And they just disappeared again. (hadn't been using MC for music playback recently - just video)
