Title: wrong cover art

Does "REMOVE COVER ART" remove all cover art files on the hard drive or for just the listed album?
(the permission box asks "Do you also want to permanently delete the cover art files from your hard disk?" -suggests a total erasure.)

Half a dozen album covers are just wrong. How do I get rid of them and prevent the same mistake from happening next time MC checks the internet?

This is choosing Remove Cover Art from the right-click menu? It will act upon the items that are currently selected (highlighted).

After removing them, MC won't automatically add them back unless you do it yourself or tell MC to get cover art from internet for those files.
