Title: Cyrillic subtitles
Post by: Alex Peychev on February 18, 2013, 07:49:05 am
Sorry but I can't figure out what to do so the cyrillic subtitles are showed properly (from .srt file). All I get are some sort of hieroglyphics. Thanks!

Please try saving the .srt file as UTF-8 or UTF-16 using Notepad (or any other text editor).

Thank you Matt!

I will try that, but the Media Player Classic reads them fine (when set to Russian). Is it possible to implement such function in the MC18 so the extra step converting the SRT file is not necessary?

When converting ANSI to Unicode, we use the system code page.  So if you set the machine locale to Russian, we'll treat ANSI characters 128-255 as Russian.

We do not perform heuristics to guess how to map characters 128-255 (so we'd guess Russian even if you're using English as the system setting).

In my opinion, there's almost no reason for ANSI to exist in a stored file.  UTF-8 or UTF-16 should be used for any text that contains characters over 127.
