Title: Installation problem
Post by: reakoh on February 22, 2013, 04:58:51 am
Hi,

The install file, MediaCenter180106.exe, won't execute.
I tried to install MC18 after a crash of MC16 which I was using.

Here's what happened:
I use Windows 7 Ultimate.
Windows crashed too, because of the crash of MC16.
So I a hard-resetted the system using the reset button on the pc.
I chose normal startup.
Windows started ok and all programs worked properly - except MC16..
When I double click the file, I see the mouse arrow change a few seconds, but MC16 won't start.
Then I downloaded the MC18 install file from jriver.com, thinking I wanted to upgrade sometime anyway.
Then I discovered that the install file won't startup either!

Here's what I tried afterwards:
I tried to remove the previous MC-versions I have installed: MC14, MC15, MC16.
Windows encouters problems removing the old versions: it won't start JRMediaUninstall.dll; 'invalid access to memory location'
Then I ran chkdsk and and the windows memory recovery tool which found no defects.
So it seems all MC-related programs won't startup, not even in safe mode.

Please help.

Rico

Very strange.  Perhaps some "security" program is causing a problem?  Take a look at the "Weird Problems" thread in my signature.

Thanks I uninstalled the virus software, disabled windows firewall, cleaned up temp folders, extracted the install file first using WinRAR.
Unfortunately that didn't help to solve the problem.
Extracting works.
After extracting, the installation stops after about 5 seconds, displaying nothing but a mouse icon change ('working').
I tried to execute several freshly downloaded install files, worked.
Only the MC-related executables don't work.
So I can't remove, run or install any MCx.
When trying to remove, the 'invalid access to memory location' message pops up.
Could there be any kind of damage to the registry after the crash causing the problem?
Is it possible to check the registry settings related to MC?

In my personal last.fm track history I found awkward track playing times of the latest played album; it seems that some tracks were skipped or so.
See http://www.last.fm/user/reakoh/tracks (http://www.last.fm/user/reakoh/tracks)
I checked these files using another player and found the files are not corrupt.
The album was played using Gizmo, although I was not listening during these 20 minutes; I was away.
Strange that the play order was reversed too, I just pressed play in recently played albums (Gizmo).

Some more info:

I just downloaded MC18 via IE to the default location, same problem when running the install file: extract but then nothing 5 secs later.

In the extracted file folder I found the file 'Media Core Launcher' in 'MediaCenter180106\System\Always Overwrite'.
When I run it I get the 'Critical Error':

---------
The following module has failed to load:
C:\.....\MediaCenter180106\System\Always Overwrite\Media Core Launcher.exe

It has reported the following error:

Failed to load JRTools.

Please reinstall the latest version of the program.
---------

Which I was already trying..

Please help.

I noticed the icons for media files have changed into non-MC-icons, so I guess this must be some kind of registry problem?
