What exactly happens when I have a custom field in the MC library which is stored in the files as a custom tag and I rename this field in the Library?
I added a field [MFSL] in which I entered the MFSL catalog code. Not long after I realized I should have created a more general field because the MFSL catalog number is not the only thing I'd like to record, I would also like to add numbers for non-MFSL releases which are special. Ideally I'd like to rename this field to "Release Nr." or "Album Version", I'm not sure yet.
I mean, I can rename this field in the library no problem, but what happens with all the files that have this field stored internally? I tested this with a small subset and a testfield, and these fields are not renamed, or at least not initially.
What is the proper procedure to make sure information is carried over?
I'm thinking to do the following:
Create the new field I want
Move the info from the old to the new field
Update all the tags from library
Remove the field from the library
But ...
Won't this leave this field as a tag in all the files, or is that field removed from the file when its emptied?

You cannot rename a field, only change its MC-displayed name (the field name remains the same). This solves the dilemma that would occur with existing files and tag values.
If you want to change a field's name, you'll have to:
- create the new field
- populate it with the old field's values
- blank the old field's values
- update file tags from library
- delete the old field from MC
When MC writes tags, it writes its entire tag block, and empty tags are not written (hence, your old field is removed).

Better late than never, thanks.
