On Mac iTunes, m4a can refer both to AAC (lossy compression, ~10:1) and ALAC (lossless compression ~2:1). Don't know about anything about the Windows side.
In iTunes, the "Kind" column shows them as AAC audio file and Apple Lossless audio file respectively.
I hope this can be implemented in future versions.
