I have setup J River on a Windows 8 machine that maps the music files to a Windows Home Server (WHS) box. Things seem to work ok but, periodically, I get a pop up window that says;
"There was a problem retrieving files from the selected DLNA server"
Question:
Should I map my music files the the WHS?
I also have the option of mapping files to a Drobo hard drive (ethernet connected)... is that a better solution.
Thanks in advance for some help with this.

Are you using the WHS box as a DLNA server and using JRiver to connect to it? If so and you don't need the DLNA capabilities of the WHS box then yes it might be better to import the files into a JRiver library and use JRiver's excellent cataloguing facilities instead of the way WHS indexes them and just remotely connecting to it via JRiver. This will remove the extra DLNA layer from the equation. Whether you leave the files on the WHS box or move them to another NAS shouldn't really matter, unless of course WHS is that unreliable as a file server!
