Here's a crash report with the latest stable version of MC18.
http://www.friefro.no/jriver/JRiver%20Log%202013-04-02%2022-33-29.zip
I use a Compaq 8510W laptop. Win 8. I have tried HQ and standard. Hardware acceleration off and on.
It also crashes on every DVD I have tried.
BluRay works with some stuttering.
Windows media player and VLC plays everything just fine.

Thanks for the log and sorry for the trouble.
I think it's crashing when encoding the output as AC3.
Could you try disabling this in DSP Studio > Output Format > Output surround sound as Dolby Digital
Let's see if that solves the crash, and we'll figure out how to handle it next.

Thanks! Finally a useful answer, I have a long thread on the same issue, but regarding DVD. But DVD's work now too!
Thanks again!

I am experiencing similar problems. I am running Windows 8 using my TV. I am able to playback various video files like mkv in J. river Media Center 18, but I am unable to playback vob files. I can view the first few seconds and the application crashes.
I've been trying to configure the settings like you advised, but I need more specific directions since I'm not able to make it work from what I've been doing. I find the DSP Studio and output format, and then what do I do in there??

Welcome. A few things to try:
1) Make sure you're using Red October Standard in Options > Video
2) Disable any bitstreaming in Options > Audio
3) Set DSP Studio > Output Format to a simple consistent configuration like 2 channels, 44,100 Hz. If that works, then explore more complex arrangements.
Let us know how you fare.
