If you experience a crash, please update to the latest build. You'll find it in a thread near the top of this board.
If you still have a crash, please post details:
1. Build number you're using (18.0.165 is the latest as of today).
2. OS you use. For example: 10.6.8 . Don't report it as SL or any other nickname.
3. What triggers the crash.
4. File types you use. ALAC, for example.
5. Are you storing files locally? Or are you using a NAS drive or USB drive or Library Server.
-
I have received a few logs showing crashes when importing M4A / ALAC files. I believe it will be fixed in the next build:
1. Fixed: M4A / ALAC tagging reading and writing could be problematic if the 'Play files from memory' option was enabled.
If you have this problem, you could turn off 'Play files from memory' and see if it solves the crash. Or just wait for the next build and test again.
Thanks.

I assume yes, but I will ask: are you distinguishing between a crash (MC closes unexpectedly, crash reporter loads) and a freeze (program stops responding, cmd-opt-esc to quit it, crash reporter loads)? If yes, we should not worry about freezes for now?
Thanks –
Micah
-
I can get MC to crash by going into Tools->Options->Audio->DSP & output format... Then closing the DSP window and then clicking Ok on the options window.
MC 18.0.165
Mac Mini OSX 10.8.3 Fully patched
Related to that, the DSP window should be focused above all other windows. It is always behind, and a pain to get at. It never comes to the front.

+1, yep.

That was where I was as well. The only difference with me is it happens while using the music server, NOT when I run the digits N bits out the USB port.

Build 18.0.165
O.S. 10.6.8
Trigger#1 : importing files.
File type: MP3, ALAC, AIFF (Wav and DSD can be imported)
Files stored locally (Folders on Desktop)
Trigger#2: playing tracks (few seconds after start play it crashes)
File type: Wav, DSD
Note: in this case the sound is very noisy and crackling.
May be I have some other triggers but I'm concentrated on import and sound.
Thanks

These may be the same problem, a filetype that causes it.
Please try importing a single file type at a time, to see if you can identify the one that does it.
If a WAV file causes a problem, please tell us more about it. Is it something ripped in MC? Or is it something "special"?

All the file type are affected.
I was wrong with wav: it can be imported and played correctly, sorry.
BUT
if I extract and convert with MC (for Windows) all the files are correctly imported with MC on Mac.
The files that crash MC were produced from conversions made with a program on windows (xrecode) from flac/cue.
For all the files the sound is very noisy and crackling.
Thanks
P.S.: obviously no problem at all with MC on Windows.
-
Jim:
Can I repeat my question about crashes vs freezes? No crashing, but a freeze after every second song I play (seriously).
Thanks –
Micah
EDIT: it doesn't appear to be two songs, it appears to freeze within ten minutes. I play from a NAS and I know OS X is notoriously crappy with smb shares. Might that be it?
-
A freeze is different from a crash. You could start a new thread if you have one.
If the drive is unreliable, MC will be unreliable.
-
OK, thanks Jim. Sorry if I sounded frustrated: things have been really bad since .163. I'll start a freeze thread.
The NAS isn't unreliable to connect to at all (not nearly as bad as when I have to VPN into work) but smb can be slow in 10.8. Sometimes the connection times out when loading folders with many items. Thankfully this only happens in Finder in my root music dir (uh, something like 4000 artist folders), not through ftp or terminal.
Micah

Could you send a small problem wav file to Matt at jriver? Include a link to this thread.
-
Uh, hi Jim, sorry I'm back. I just had an actual crash but crash reporter did not come up.
1. 10.8.165
2. 10.8.3
3. crash happened when the last queued track finished playing and the last.fm api access window in Chrome popped up (I had turned it on mid-play to see if it worked yet)
4. mp3s
5. files are on a NAS connected via smb IP address
I've got the error report if anyone wants to see it...
Thanks –

Only to update on Build 167 on 10.6.8
Now the imported files (all type) ripped from MC Windows are playable flawlessly. 8)
All the file type (except wav) generated/ripped outside MC still crashing on import. I have 55.000 files, mostly alac so I am a little bit anxious ;D
Please let me know if I should continue to report the situation to any new build or if I should just wait (this simply to avoid unnecessarily bother).
Thanks

167 & 10.8.2 crash no longer happened when I unticked the auto import option. Files are all aiff on an independent internal mac pro drive.

I am using MC18 as a server on a Mac Mini and as a client on MacBook Pro with Retina.
I had 4 crashes since this morning on my MC server on the Mac Mini. The client stops working, but it does not crash.
When I restart the server I can play few more songs from the server before it crashes again.
Below is the crash report:

OS X 10.8.3, build 168. I'm still experiencing the occasional crash when tagging files -- usually not right away, but after I've done a few. Typically it's preceded by a period (3-5 seconds) of disc thrashing. Mostly ALAC files, but this morning's happened with a FLAC (24-bit, 88.2k resolution).
Updated: it happened again just now. Here's the crash report:

Hi Jim –
1. 10.8.168
2. 10.8.3
3. Still have a crash when I type in the search window. Strangely, seems to happen less often if I type slowly.
4. mp3s
5. files are on a NAS connected via smb IP address

Started messing around with .169 today and noticed two things:
First the application kept randomly stealing focus and popping to the top.
Second after several songs it just shut down (crashed) - no messages, it just closed.
1. .169
2. 10.8.3
3. It was just playing files.
4. FLAC, M4A, MP3
5. Library server

I have had zero crashes for a few weeks and now tonight I am getting crashs every two minutes or so after the program is open. It does not matter if I am playing music or not.

Please try the new 173 build, we think it should get rid of a lot of these crashes.
Please report your experience - thanks!

I just downloaded MC18 for mac and I have 192/24 music and when I click to play It says it can't play through core audio (prob bc my DAC is an Audioquest dragonfly at 96/24 max). so I go into DSP options and try to change the conversion rate and it crashes every time. re-download? anybody?

Please install the latest build.

I believe this is where you wanted crash reports.
JRiver 18.0.174
MAC OS 10.8.3
Late 2012 Mac Mini with 16 GIG Memory - SSD boot drive (internal) - 1 terrabyte internal (second internal) HD with music files.
Most Files are either in AIFF or DSF format. ALL STORED LOCAL.
Launch Media Center
Choose Tools->Options->Media Network
Add or Configure DLNA Servers
Audio -> Format -> PCM 24 Bit
Click "OK"
Click "OK" again
Crash - every time...
Let me know if you need other details.

Hey Bplexico, I installed the most current MC and the bit rate conversion issue has seemed to be fixed. But thank you for the response. I'm glad that this program works because it is much better than the (mac only) Fidelia app you can buy on apples app store. I don't know how they do it but the sound on HiFi music 96/24 FLAC sounds noticeably better. Better to me I suppose is just means more natural..... hold on lol MC is starting to glitch at the moment. Stuttering while playing a song.. dunno why. Maybe I'll need a crash report after all..

Hi Jim
I have encountered crashes die to playing ALAC 24/192 files ( mentioned this in the ##.174 topic)
I have an issue with playing ALAC 24/192 files with the last couple of updates.(program stops and have to re-select the source via DAC). It even crashed couple of times.
FLAC 24/192 plays fine (also the files transformed from ALAC to FLAC play then).
Any Id why or how to resolve?
NB: using MC via DLNA to Superuniti,
NB: happy listener!!
