Title: HDHomeRun Prime
Post by: muzicman0 on April 10, 2013, 11:16:36 pm
I was excited to see experimental support for the prime, so I downloaded build 166 and installed, but it doesn't show up in my list of tuners...am I missing something?  My 4 HDHomeRun tuners show, but not the prime...

problem is it just says no signal, so it's still not working...

I have this unit, it needs a good coax antenna to get a signal.

I have signal...been using it for months in WMC, with no issues on multiple PC's...but jriver says no signal...I'm guessing I am doing something wrong, but I don't know what it is.  My HDHomeRun's (non-prime) seem to work fine.

The channel you were trying to play is "copy free"?  If not, MC will not get any signal.  If it is copy free, send me a log file.  yaobing at jriver dot com

[EDIT] In case someone searches the forum and find this thread, there is a sticky thread which summarizes the instructions on how to use the device. (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=83318.msg568748#msg568748).  Please refer to that thread.

yes, all of my channels are copy freely, and they also work in the HDHomeRun quick TV app.  I will try to get a log tonight...how do I do that?

Thanks for the log.  It shows that a network call failed.  Check your Firewall settings.  Make sure the firewall gives MC full permission for network access.

I'll double check, but I believe the firewall is turned off...at least the Windows firewall is.

yep...I just checked, and the firewall is off.  I'm a network engineer, so I can figure out communication issues...what IP is it failing to get to?  I will make sure there is 2 way communication established and go from there.

Ok, maybe not a network issue then.  It was failing to call an AVTransport service function, but was not failing other service functions.

If I enter that URL into chrome, I get the following response back:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

So, obviously, no a http 500 response.

any other ideas?

just FYI, that URL returned the following:

So it didn't come back empty...or at least not this time.

The log shows that all such request for description returned with zero byte.  I assume you did not post the complete file as it seems to be truncated.  Do you see an action named "Play" in the xml file?  I do see GetMediaInfo in the part you posted.  These are the two we need to call.

I do not know what to suggest right now.

yes, sorry, I didn't realize I did...there are 14 instances of the word play in the xml...here is the whole file:

EDIT: it wouldn't let me post the whole thing (>12000 characters)...here it is up until the last 'play' in the xml.

Yeah, it is there.  This was what I was looking for:

<name>InstanceID</name>
...

I wonder why the call failed to get the info.  I will investigate.

FWIW, I am having a similar issue these days with my HDHomeRun (not sure if it's PRime or not off the top of my head). I can view live content via HDHomeRun's utility (that relies on WMP, I believe). I'd say it's been for the last month or two. I haven't posted as I don't really have time to do any proper debugging or log file submission (still don't, so this will remain a "me too" post).

Just FYI...I just tried this on my other PC, and same results.  I thought I would list what I am doing, just in case I am missing something:

1) Fresh install of MC18
2) in Options, I am enabling DLNA (it seems without this, the prime's are not even detected)
3) load program guide data from mc2xml
4) attempt to watch TV
5) wait for 30 or so seconds, then the 'no signal' appears.

I also have 4 non prime hdhomerun's, but I have not even loaded guide data for them.  I did verify that 192.168.0.71 is the prime IP address though.

Oh yeah, and I wasn't on the latest firmware, but I did go ahead and update to the latest before installing on this PC, with no change in behavior.

This may also be the URL validator bug, especially if it worked in build 18.0.164.

I don't think anyone verified that it worked in build 164.  Although I did put the experimental support of the device in 164, it was not announced until 165.

Sorry, still no log.

I wonder if it is caused by the log being too large for attachment.

To keep the log small, restart MC (close MC, and if you run Media Server, close Media Server, then start MC) and then go to run tests immediately.  After the test, send the log immediately.

I'm still in my trial period and the only reason that's stopping me from purchasing is that the software does not work with hdhomerun prime...

Walter.

Same problem here.  Trying out JRiver because I'm frustrated with WMC, namely not being able to set up MadVR for live TV and constantly having to re-do my channel line-up.

Anyways, I have a Ceton InfiniTV4 PCIE and a HD Home Run Prime.  I've let JRiver through the firewall and turned on DLNA.  In the television setup tab under options, it doesn't see either/any of the tuners.

Edit:  I'm also on Comcast, and all my channels are copy freely.

You should see both Ceton and HDHR Prime.  You need to wait a couple of minutes after starting MC.  Do you see the Prime under "Playing Now" (after other DLNA devices show up there)?  I might have let Prime slip through my filter and show up there.  I know Ceton used to show up there until I filtered it out.  When you see the Prime under Playing Now, you should see both Ceton and the Prime under Television options.

Ceton should work.  Prime is still not working right (last time someone reported back).

I also have an issue with MC18 build 189 using HDHomeRun Prime.  The three tuners show up under DLNA and I'm able to load channels, program guide, etc. under Devices --> Television for this device.  This is a lot more than I was getting under previous builds.  However, when I select a channel and hit WATCH, MC18 crashes every time.  It brings up a black display with a message to move the courser to the border for menu, but then it crashes without doing anything.  I'm able to use WMC without any issues.

OK, I got a Prime.  I toyed around with WMC and gave up.  Seems there aren't many good options out for this type of thing.  WMC is not configurable enough.  Other options are too cludgy and too customizable.  I just don't have that kind of time.

I'm already invested in JRiver.  What do you need to make this work?

The support folks at SiliconDust told me that the most common problem that prevents an application from receiving video stream is firewall.  You need to make sure you give Media Center full network access in your firewall settings, including both in-bound and out-bound access.

As I have mentioned this, I also have my firewall disabled.  The symptoms are repeatable on several computers.  If there was any connectivity issue then other software would not work either.  Nextpvr works, wmc and mediaportal (although just with air and not through cablecard).

From SiliconDust:

If the issue persists, please enable the sending of diagnostic data on the Advanced tab in HDHomeRun Setup, power cycle the HDHomeRun PRIME, reproduce the issue, and reply back with the device ID for the HDHomeRun, the channel number you tried to watch, and the time you tried to watch it, and we will check the device logs.

It is a little bit of a round-about way since I am talking to the SiliconDust support, but I am not using the device directly.  Please check "Send diagnostic information to SiliconDust support", and power cycle the HDHomeRun PRIME as instructed above.  Then run Media Center and try to play a channel.  Afterwards forward me the device ID and the channel number and the time you tried to play it etc. so I can forward them to SiliconDust.

I'm unsure which of the 3 tuners were used, but they all start with what is listed above, which should be adequate...the -x would be -0, -1, or -2.  Most likely it was -0.

Updated HDHomeRun Prime on Win 7 with latest s/w which also updated firmware on device.  Updated MC18 with latest build 18.0.194.  It's no longer crashing, but indicates "No Signal" when trying to Watch.  Works fine with WMC and QuickTV.  Three tuners show up as IDLE.  F/W is open.  :(

This is not a HDHomeRun Prime 'only" bug - it is a "Live TV switching" bug. My 2250 does this too when it uses MadVR to play back Live TV. If I switch to RO-STD I don't get the freezes. So you should try that too for now. To be fair it may be MadVR, not MC. I just read that the next version of MadVR (should be in MC .207) has fixed the display switching problem (assuming that is the issue). Hopefully in a few days I'll be able to test this for myself.

It works....sort of.  I find that the drop-down menu focus does not last for more than a second or two.  As I try to navigate down to right sub-menu options, the menu disappears.  Nearly impossible to change anything.  MC also crashes when I stop playing a show.

It's a good start, but there are some stability issues for sure.

Anyone else seeing this?  I wonder if this is common for all Prime users.  As soon as the tuners are loaded, they seem to periodically steal focus from MC.

These issues are unique to HD Primes. I complained about the difficulty selecting menu objects in one of the main build threads. I can't recall whether it occurs in standard mode. I was never able to select madVR in either FSE or windowed mode. I basically use the taskbar gadget. I have just worked around it. With madVR running there are strange things that happen. I know it's not supported but I am able to run with hardware acceleration with madVR without the crash on exit.

I need to make a correction. These issues are NOT unique to HD Primes. The Ceton will do the same thing when using RO HQ.. You can run madVR and LAV in custom mode and the misbehavior on exit will not occur. The closing of the drop down menus is an intermittent thing with 205 but has been around for a couple of revs.

I'm using Red October HQ.  I have Hardware Acceleration and VideoClock options checked too.  I have zero problems with playback from any other video (iso, bdmv, mkv, mp4, mov, m2ts, ts), many of which are large 40+ GB.  Only ending playback from HDHomeRun Prime TV causes MC crashes.

I'll try switching to STD to see if it eliminates the crashing.  Sounds like the menu focus thing is a known issue and separate from the crashing.

Fixed: MC could crash when it stops playing a CableCARD tuner, especially in Red October HQ.

About that I am still in the dark.

This focus issue when using the right mouse options in any menu is not isolated to HDHomeRun viewing.  I found that it's been introduced with MC .206 upgrade from .193 and needs to be looks at.

Specifically, if you right button click any menu in MC, the menu disappears within 3 seconds which is definitely not enough time to make any selections or changes.  It makes MC very difficult to use now.  Try pasting some cover art which is a few level down and you won't be able too.  Something broke with this upgrade and I'd like to roll it back until it's fixed.

I can't believe that this isn't seen by more folks and picked up in testing before release, but it's definitely a bug which is obviously seen now by those of us in this thread that have upgraded to .206 for the HDHomeRun fix.

I reported this issue in the MC18 .206 thread and others have seen it as well.  I downgraded to .193 and the right context menu focus problem disappeared.  I'll forego HDHomeRun support benefits of .206 until a new release comes out the fixes this focus bug.

Are the guys over at SiliconDust in the loop over this one? When I've looked, I haven't seen much action on the SD forum. I think I found 1 or 2 posts related to MC.

I had some problems with the HDHR3-DT recently. I turned on the diagnostic switch for the unit and raised a trouble ticket.

It was a simple problem in the end and was solved quickly (thanks to Yaobing and the guys over at SD) but it retaught me the old lesson that the software has to integrate with the hardware. In my case, the hardware was the issue..   ;)

Hi jriverfan...you have no idea how much time I've been waiting to see JRiver + HDHomerun primer to finally work together (around 2 years). Now I can finally build a new HTPC around JRiver and use it to record my cable programming (something that I can only do with MCE).

I have a question to you 'though. Can you watch/record basic + basic extended programming (NOT premium like HBO)?.  I have HDHomeRun Prime + CableCARD + Cisco Tuner Adapter (this box is necessary in order to watch Switched Digital Video (SVD) channels). But again, only have basic + basic extended plan (with this SDV some OverTheAir HD channels that are now in 7XX number).

Thanks in advance,
Javier

Our support for CableCARD devices is limited to copy-free channels.  Any channel that is encrypted will not work.  We are not sure whether and when we will add encrypted channel support.  The number of channels from a given provider that are "copy-free" depends on the provider.  Currently Comcast in my area provides most channels copy-free, except premium channels.  So I can watch most channels using HDHomeRun Prime, but not the premium channels.

Hi Yaobing/jriverfan,

Yesterday I finally finished building a new HTPC and then I installed JRiver v19. I disabled firewall (just in case) and although JRiver recognized Silicondust HDHomeRun Tuners (Tools->Drivers & Devices->Television->TV Options) I got the dreaded "no television tuner available...".

I couldn't find anything on the WiKi but then (Thanks Google search!) I found and followed http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=83318.0 and I was able to wacth TV without problem :-)

The problems is it seems Time Warner San Diego (Digital) has most of it programming (i 'm guessing) copy once or copy protected since I can only watch channel 1~24, everything above 24 returns black. And worse, those are low-res 4:3 version of 16:9/5.1 HDTV channel 701~7XX.

I also notice that JRiver can only tune the same channels that HDHomeRun QuickTV can tune (QuickTV can only tune free-copy channels).

Anyway, it seems I'm back to non-configurable (I do want to install/use my own video/audio renderers) Microsoft MCE until JRiver can solve this (or cut the cord which everyday sounds more and more appealing).

Sad, from my little meddling with JRiver I really like it (well, not Netflix application, but all else :-). I know supporting encrypted programming means spending a lot of money in developing and licensing and I really hope you can make it happen some day. I'll keep track on your releases and developing, I'm sure one way or another I'll have JRiver in my HTPC :-)

Until then the best luck for JRiver team,

Yaobing,

Why is it that my PS3 can tune the encrypted channels (HBO, Show, etc)?

I suppose it tunes to the channel by other means.  MC can not tune to the premium channels because we have not implemented such capability.

I upgrade to MC19 and tv tuner is not working. From the tuner types open cable is no longer an option. Any ideas why?

For HDHomerun Prime, if your CableCARD is still in it and you did not change its configuration inside HDHomerun software, the only Tuner Type options should be "OpenCable" and "Disabled".  What did you get?

Only thing that I changed was the MC upgrade. Options shown are DISABLED, DVB C, QAM, DVB T, and DVB S. No open cable and it still works on my pc that i didnt upgrade.

Did you select the correct device before clicking Configure... button?  The device should be named as "HDHomeRun Prime xxxxxxxx (OpenCable)", not "SiliconDust HDHomeRun Tuner xxxxxxx (Digital)".

Run SiliconDust utility from Start > All Programs > HDHomeRun > HDHomeRun Setup.  Go to Tuners tab.  Do you see three CableCARD tuners listed?  The "xxxxxxx" part of the name above should be one of the the device IDs which you find on the Tuners tab.

Yes, all 3 tuners are there, with cablecard as source type.

And you selected one of them in MC TV Options to configure?  The reason I ask is that CableCARD devices are treated totally differently from other digital TV devices, so there is no chance that we would offer "ATSC", "DVB-T", etc. as choices for Tuner Type.

Please provide a log if this is still not resolved.

I am trying to configure an HDHomeRun Prime using MC 19.0.111. When I go to the TV Options, I see three HDHomeRun Tuner Devices. However, they are all (digital) and can only be set to ATSC, DVB-T, DVB-S, DVB-C, QAM.

There are no (OpenCable) devices. Any idea how I can get these to appear?

Please take a look at these instructions if you have not done so, (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=83318.0)

1. DLNA option must be on.
2. You need to wait a minute or so for the devices to appear in the list.

Yes. I had followed those instructions...Anyway, I went back to it today and the tuners are now there. Perhaps it was because the CableCard had not yet been validated with Comcast (that took a long time with their Level 2 support to fix).

You may have already covered off this port of call but this post prompted me to have a look at the Silicondust website:
http://www.silicondust.com/support/hdhomerun/downloads/ (http://www.silicondust.com/support/hdhomerun/downloads/)
They released a soft/firm-ware update on 21 Jan 2014. It's been a long time between official releases (the last was March 2013). The latest and greatest may be of use to you.
