We've fixed most of the problems we can reproduce. My guess is that the remaining ones occur when one or both of these conditions exists.
1. Apple formats are present. ALAC, AIFF...
2. Auto import is running in the background.
So, if you have seen crashes with build 174 or above, try eliminating one or both of these factors.
If you have no Apple formats and you are not using auto import, but you still have a crash, please report the build number that you are using.
Thanks.
-
I installed the 174 build last night, and I have OSX 10.8.3 Mountain Lion running on a Mac Mini.
I cannot play several .dsf files so I was trying to make sure the audio output was set correctly. I went to Tools > Options > Audio > Output Mode and each time I click OK to exit the dialog box MC crashes. I tried making changes then OK, not making changes then OK, and it always crashes whether music is playing or not. Clicking Cancel does not crash MC.

Jim,
Conditions:
S.O. 10.6.8
build 18.0.174
run auto-import on background not selected
any type of file, Apple (alac, aiff) and non Apple (wav, mp3, Flac)
If a track file has incorporated a cover and visualisation of MC is set to display thumbnails, MC crashes on import (but on reopening the files seems correctly imported. )
If the file does not contain cover art mc works.
If the file contains cover art but mc is set to hide the thumbnails mc works.
I have already sent a sample file and logs to John and I'm waiting for feedback (but the wait is not a problem).
You already have done a test and you could not reproduce the problem because the test was carried out on the wrong version of the O.S. (10.7)
My system has the 10.6.8, if you want to try facing with this problem maybe you should use this version.
Thanks for the effort on support and regards.
Gianni.
P.S.
I discovered another crash condition
If I select 3d album view I get an error "Error starting Direct3D engine (unknown DirectX or hardware failure)
then if I selcet another view MC crashes.

Hi Jim
I have reported program closing when any attempt to set the output format is made. Having seen your post I have now switched off (de-selected) auto import in background and I can now visit the DSP page and the program no longer closes on applying settings.
However, if I change the setting to say play all at 96kHz, I can come out of the option page without program closing and the new setting works when playing via the optical out on the Mac, but does not work via UPnP were the original file settings are used. I am guessing that this is to be expected until we are able to left click and set each output individually as in the Windows version. I only have WAV files on my system.
Thanks for all your excellent work.

10.8.3
18.0.174
when doing any type of search, either in the search bar up top or the play doctor, it causes a crash after a few keystrokes.
http://pastebin.com/2FmH3q7D
edit: windows server, mac client. both running 174
Also, it appears to be related to displaying the list of results. If I type really fast and if my computer is bogged down, I can get to the "no results found" before the possible results appear and avoid the crash.

I can consistently reproduce this with the exact same settings, as well as just using a local Mac library, no server connection. No auto-import, some ALAC/M4A (<10% of library). In fact, I can consistently make MC crash on the third keystroke in the search window.

MC crashes when you
1. Select Tools>Options>Startup
2. Uncheck "Optimize volume for best sound quality"
3. Press ok
Hope it helps,

MC 18.0.176
Mac OS 10.8.3 White unibody macbook, 8G ram.
It worked amazingly well when I did a trial of the software but ever since I purchased it and registered it, MC will no longer play any audio files. I open up the library and click on a song, says it is buffering and then crashes, every single time. It doesn't matter what audio format it is. I've tried FLAC, ALAC, AIF, mp3, m4a, and the program crashes every time. I have no problem importing music, it just won't play it.
-
Try selecting the device in Tools/Audio.
-
For the guys with the crashes when typing into Play Doctor or the Search box, does last night's build help those at all? (build 176)

Running build 177, Mac Mini IOS Ver 10.6.8. Trying to import 2Tb of music files mostly flac from my NAS, MC crashes before it finishes. Also, when I start MC it opens then when I click on Audio it minimizes then won't come back up, I have to quit and restart it happens 90% of the time.

I am running 18.0.177 now and still suffering from crashes when importing. I could only import 87 albums (starting after an empty directory), I started several times auto-import and also tried to import one map by one the maps, nothing helped. It is now completely unusable. i hope you can fix this soon or give me a clue whether it is a problem on my laptop or a program error. please let me now if you need more information.

It appears to crash importing an APE file. It's in file I/O, so it's not clear if it's APE specific or file I/O specific.
Could you use Help > Logging to get a crash log? It'll tell us which APE file is the problem, then if we can get a copy of that file, we might be able to reproduce and fix the crash.
Thanks.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.3, I haven't been able to play any of my files. Media Center launches but when I double click to play a song it crashes. It's been happening 100% of the time even when I install the latest build.

here it is
i renamed the specific .ape file and after that it imports without any problem. (i had only 1 .ape file in the library) correction there appears to be more then 1, but less then 10, but it crashes only on the one mentioned in the log output

Mac Mini, external USB 1 TB drive

I don't know where to post this, since more logical threads are locked. In any event, simply trying to import my music crashes the application completely. Trying to import consistently causes a crash. Auto-import seemingly does nothing at all, so I have been using the "import now" function, to the point of a predictably certain crash.
Build 18.0.181
OS 10.6.08
I have FLAC, MP3 , and both protected and non-DRM iTunes files. HOWEVER, I maintain the uncompressed FLAC and compressed MP3 and iTunes files in separate subdirectories and the auto-import fails long before the FLAC import has concluded . Right now, the portion of the library that did import is all FLAC.
The files are stored on a NAS. Both the NAS and the Mac are connected to the same router by ethernet cables.
Until my library can import, I don't consider this to be a usable build.
EDIT: You know what? It doesn't matter what I do. Every third or fourth click on any menu item whatsoever causes a crash. I would like to do a complete uninstall and reinstall but can't find any of the preference or library files needed to do so. I tried to paste the last crash report here, but exceeded the maximum message length when I did.

do these files have cover art embedded?
-
do these files have cover art embedded?
Nearly all do, yes. I forgot to mention that most of the directories also have PureMusic bookmarks directories in them. Those directories include small m4a files hat allow iTunes to manage FLAC files.
There's something much more fundamentally wrong here, though, I am betting , that goes well beyond the import issues. After posting my original note, I stopped trying to import and started to play around with the application. I turned off auto-import -although it appeared the app continued to try to re-load the original library even after I deleted all entries -and clicked through various menu items. It absolutely did not matter what I did: every three or four clicks, tops, I got a crash. Reading others' comments here, I don't get the sense that anyone else is experiencing an app that is so fundamentally unstable that it simply is unusable that it just begs to be uninstalled I therefore have to conclude there is something unusual and wonky in my MacBook Pro configuration, although I cannot imagine what that might be.

If your OS is 10.6.8, not 10.6.08 as stated above, that should now work. I'm sorry it isn't and I don't know what the problem may be. Restarting your computer would be worth trying.
Try turning off auto import and importing one folder at a time, just to test.

Okay, making progress here. Yes, it is 10.6.8; typo there, as I was posting from a tablet and my typing isn't great on them.
A restart took care of the "every third click crashes this thing" problem, at least for now. After the restart, I had a couple of freezes, but only crashed when importing files. Both autoimport and manual import ran fine until I got to one particular folder in one of the FLAC folders I was trying to import as part of a larger music share that was set to auto-import when auto-import is enabled. Turns out I had an .ape file in that folder. That brought things to a screeching halt. When I converted it to FLAC, everything continued past that place in the folder. As it's still running right now, I don't know if there's a happy ending, but this is a much better voyage right now.
One minor point unrelated to crashing: When I first start to play music, I get a loud pop through my speakers and then everything generally plays fine. Is there something I can do to avoid the pop, such as change buffers or the like?
Thanks for the support.
EDIT: That .ape file was the problem. I never had an issue with it in the PC version of Media Center (it's clearly an old file, as I transitioned from .ape to FLAC years ago), but it brought the Mac version to its knees. All seems much better now, thank you.

I have a crash problem on "import a folder" for a particular album:
Version is 18.0.181
On OSX 10.8.3
The problem appears to be some sort of path length issue as it doesn't occur when I move the files to a different directory and import from there. I've have the log files, but the paths are:
0018945: 149999616: Import: ImportNewFiles: Adding: /Volumes/RSqueaky-FS_Vol2/Library 3/Barenboim, Daniel/Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique/01 - Barenboim, Daniel - Berlioz- Symphonie Fantastique - Symphonie fantastique for orchestra ('Episode de la vie d'un Artiste...en cinq parties'), H.48 (Op. 14)- Visions and passions.ape
0018945: 145096704: Import: ImportNewFiles: Adding: /Volumes/RSqueaky-FS_Vol2/Library 3/Barenboim, Daniel/Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique/02 - Barenboim, Daniel - Berlioz- Symphonie Fantastique - Symphonie fantastique for orchestra ('Episode de la vie d'un Artiste...en cinq parties'), H.48 (Op. 14)- Un bal- Valse, Allegro non t.wav
0018945: 145633280: Import: ImportNewFiles: Adding: /Volumes/RSqueaky-FS_Vol2/Library 3/Barenboim, Daniel/Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique/03 - Barenboim, Daniel - Berlioz- Symphonie Fantastique - Symphonie fantastique for orchestra ('Episode de la vie d'un Artiste...en cinq parties'), H.48 (Op. 14)- Scene au champ, Adagio.ape
0018945: 146169856: Import: ImportNewFiles: Adding: /Volumes/RSqueaky-FS_Vol2/Library 3/Barenboim, Daniel/Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique/04 - Barenboim, Daniel - Berlioz- Symphonie Fantastique - Symphonie fantastique for orchestra ('Episode de la vie d'un Artiste...en cinq parties'), H.48 (Op. 14)- Marche au supplice, Allegro.ape
If I move these files to a "Badfiles" directory at the root of _Vol2, they import without problem.
These files also import without problem from a Windows version of MC, but they are on a map drive instead of this longer path.
Suggestions?
-
What happens if you shorten the path?
-
What happens if you shorten the path?
As I mentioned, if I move the files to from this directory:
/Volumes/RSqueaky-FS_Vol2/Library 3/Barenboim, Daniel/Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique/01 - Barenboim, Daniel - Berlioz- Symphonie Fantastique - Symphonie fantastique for orchestra ('Episode de la vie d'un Artiste...en cinq parties'), H.48 (Op. 14)- Visions and passions.ape
to this:
/Volumes/RSqueaky-FS_Vol2/Badfiles/01 - Barenboim, Daniel - Berlioz- Symphonie Fantastique - Symphonie fantastique for orchestra ('Episode de la vie d'un Artiste...en cinq parties'), H.48 (Op. 14)- Visions and passions.ape
They import without a crash.
I could understand there might a problem with long paths, but ideally you'd increase the path length in MC and at a minimum present an error message instead of a crash.
-

Does the crash reproduction apply to playing over a network? When my iMac is playing music to my PC, the iMac's MC program crashes, but it is random. I could be playing music for a while before a crash happens; at other times within a few minutes. I suspect that it is the Apple formats that are the cuprit, as mentioned at the start of this thread. Curiously, I have not yet encountered crashes when playing music on MC locally on the iMac. Media plays through the iMac from a Firewire drive. I can supply a log if needed.

We believe that this build will fix a problem with crashes importing APE files on 10.6:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=80691.msg549354#msg549354
It's possible it will affect other crash problems.
-
That'd be great if you could send us that ape file (dropbox?) so we can get the import fixed. Thanks.
I apologize for not seeing this earlier. If I got an email that there was activity on this thread, I missed it.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the file as .ape. When I isolated it as the crash cause, I converted it to FLAC and deleted the original. I've since emptied the trash. I am sorry I missed this request.
-
The APE file problem should be fixed in 18.0.187.
I'm locking this thread now and starting a new one.
