I wonder what spider bit him for him almost to loss his arm.
spiders not only have venom, but they also carry some harmful bacteria in there bites. some of the venom will cause major tissue damage.
not sure if that would have any effect on his liver failure.

I have no idea, but I think booze did more harm than that spider ;). At least as far as his liver was concerned.

Come to Australia where we have a vast array of nasties that will do you harm. From the limited info available it could be necrotising arachnidism:

I agree with the inflatable one, stick to the booze theory, I think it's got a lot more weight.
