Title: UPNP: DeviceDiscovery Server Crash
Post by: ThierryNK on May 29, 2013, 04:28:12 am
Hi

I use JRiver only as a UPNP server. I am using 191 version.
I have regular crashes.

Looking at the logs on Services & Plugins / Media Network, Device Discovery Server is "often" down.
This leads, after a while, to spontaneous full crashes, or the need to shutdown and restart JRiver (JRemote on iPad being unable to find JRiver)

On a fresh JRiver start, all servers are running.

JRiver is the only application running on a Mac Mini.

If needed, I can make any tests that JRiver Team would propose, and provide any other needed feedbacks.

Best and kind regards

This still happens in 193.
Maybe more rapidly.

We can reproduce the problem and are trying to track it down.  I think we've fixed the crashing problem for the next build, but the SSDP server is still mysteriously shutting down after a period of time.

Thanks for your answer.
Here, nothing else is running and no energy savings.

I am ready to help if you need some testing.

Very strange that the shutdown is not linked to the crash... Deamons that do not crash do not stop except if they receive the relevant signal to stop. Maybe some wrong decoding of signals coming  from the renderer. I can test the effect on next/previous/pause/stop from (JRemote to my renderers) and see if this has an effect on the server.
Best and kind regards

This is interesting as I have found that the Device Discovery Server (SSDP) always shows as ‘Failed to Start’ on the Mac version but ‘all servers running properly’ in the Windows version.

However, everything works as expected, I can stream perfectly well from BOTH versions of MC for many hours at a time without any problem.

How can this be?

Here, if my JRemote has found "everything" (Servers and Renderers), effectively everything keep running even after the server crashes and stops.

Now, kill JRemote and restart it. It cannot find the JRiver Server. You have to restart JRiver to get JRemote find it.

All the best

Thanks for that, I don't use wireless so no JRemote.

I have been playing optical out for about 3hrs and have just checked and it tells me all servers are running. The music has just stopped playing and on checking again it tells me that one or more servers failed to start, which is strange but it is the SSDP server which is now showing as failed to start or other error.

I am currently playing via optical out to my DAC and simultaneously streaming to my renderer, both are playing normally but he SSDP server is still showing as failed to start.

The Device Discovery server seems to have "seen" your Renderer on the Network at startup, and then JRiver does not forget it. Same as JRemote which is only a "mirror" of JRiver.

Swith off your renderer off and JRiver, launch JRiver, wait for the server to fail, then switch on your Renderer. It appears in JRiver?

Kind regards

Sorry for delay in reply, you are correct; now I understand.

I rarely switch the renderer off and as the renderer Pulls the music from the server I guess this is why I don't see this as a problem in the way others who use the program differently to me.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this.

Please try the new build (196), hopefully it fixes the SSDP problems.
